What is a BI developer?

A business intelligence (BI) developer takes data and turns it into knowledge that a business or organization can use to carry out its goals. Their job is to use their data analysis skills and technical experience to develop solutions to problems, create technical reports, and make recommendations. By creating a data model or using other analytical tools, these developers can help increase productivity, provide improvements, or cut costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI developer?

To thrive as a BI Developer, you need expertise in data modeling, SQL, and data warehousing concepts, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS, as well as experience with ETL processes and possibly certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating business needs into actionable insights. These skills and qualifications enable BI Developers to deliver accurate reporting and analytics that drive informed business decisions.

What are some key challenges BI developers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Developers often encounter challenges such as data inconsistency, varying data formats, and duplicate records when integrating data from different sources. Ensuring data quality and accuracy requires strong ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) skills and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with database administrators and business analysts is crucial to understand data structures and business requirements, which helps in designing effective data integration solutions. Overcoming these challenges not only improves reporting accuracy but also enhances decision-making across the organization.

Position Summary:

As a Senior BI Engineer, you'll play a key role in strengthening Lanter's enterprise data capabilities by designing scalable data models that turn diverse source-system data into reliable, reusable information for analytics and reporting. A key focus of this role is solving complex data modeling challenges. This includes bringing together data from across customers, business units, industries, and operational systems to create models that account for varying business rules, exceptions, and data requirements. Your work will help support increasingly sophisticated use cases, including real-time visibility into routes, shipments, stops, and the freight or items associated with them.

Working within Lanter's Azure data environment, you'll also develop and support ETL/ELT pipelines, write advanced SQL queries, and enable reporting through BI tools. As a senior technical contributor, you'll be a go-to resource for complex BI and data modeling work, helping ensure solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with evolving business needs.

Essential Duties and Key Deliverables:

  • Design scalable enterprise data models that integrate complex data from multiple operational systems into consistent, reusable structures for analytics and reporting.
  • Translate business needs into data models and reporting-ready datasets that account for varying business rules, data quality, source-system complexities, and use cases such as real-time operational visibility.
  • Build, enhance, and support ETL/ELT processes within the Azure data environment.
  • Develop and optimize SQL queries, datasets, and BI reporting solutions that enable accurate, timely business analysis.
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to translate analytics and reporting needs into scalable data solutions.
  • Support data warehouse and BI initiatives tied to pharmaceutical requirements, the Descartes implementation, AI-related data needs, and other strategic priorities.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in business intelligence engineering, data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related data role.
  • Deep hands-on data modeling experience, including designing integrated enterprise and/or dimensional models, establishing entities and relationships, determining grain and business rules, and reconciling differing source-system requirements.
  • Advanced SQL and strong ETL/ELT experience working with data from multiple operational systems.
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud-based data platforms and data lakes; experience with Databricks on Azure and Azure Data Lake is strongly preferred, with comparable cloud data platform experience considered transferable.
  • Experience translating complex or ambiguous business and reporting requirements into scalable, maintainable data solutions.
  • Experience developing or supporting BI and reporting solutions using Sigma, Power BI, or a comparable platform.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to independently own complex work.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in logistics, transportation, supply chain, or other environments with complex operational data.
  • Experience with Descartes or similar transportation/logistics technology platforms.
  • Experience supporting AI or advanced analytics data initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities; however, the Senior BI Engineer is expected to provide technical guidance, review work, and serve as a go-to resource for complex BI engineering and data modeling needs.

Position Type:

This is a full-time, remote position, with a preference for candidates who can work from our St. Louis, Missouri headquarters.

Travel may be required periodically for company meetings, training, or other business needs.

This job is performed in a professional remote or office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and other job‑related technology or systems.
