Is BI developer a good career?

A BI developer designs and implements data analysis solutions using tools like SQL, Power BI, or Tableau, making it a valuable role in data-driven organizations. The career offers opportunities for growth, competitive salaries, and requires skills in data modeling, programming, and business analysis. It is suitable for individuals interested in technology, analytics, and problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BI Developer, you need expertise in data modeling, SQL, and data warehousing concepts, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS, as well as experience with ETL processes and possibly certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating business needs into actionable insights. These skills and qualifications enable BI Developers to deliver accurate reporting and analytics that drive informed business decisions.

What are BI Developers?

BI Developers, or Business Intelligence Developers, are IT professionals who design, develop, and maintain business intelligence solutions such as dashboards, data visualizations, and reporting systems. They work with data warehouses, databases, and analytics tools to help organizations make data-driven decisions. BI Developers often use technologies like SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS to transform raw data into actionable insights. Their work supports business operations by providing timely and accurate information for strategic planning.

What Is a BI Developer?

A business intelligence (BI) developer takes data and turns it into knowledge that a business or organization can use to carry out its goals. Their job is to use their data analysis skills and technical experience to develop solutions to problems, create technical reports, and make recommendations. By creating a data model or using other analytical tools, these developers can help increase productivity, provide improvements, or cut costs.

How much do BI developers earn?

BI developers typically earn a median salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with advanced skills in SQL, data visualization tools, and certifications may earn higher salaries. Entry-level positions generally start lower, while senior roles can exceed $120,000.

What jobs make $1,000,000 a year?

In the context of a BI Developer, earning $1,000,000 annually is uncommon and typically involves executive-level roles such as Chief Data Officer or Chief Technology Officer, or highly successful entrepreneurs in data-related businesses. These positions often require extensive experience, leadership skills, and sometimes equity or profit-sharing arrangements. Most BI Developers earn significantly less, with top salaries reaching several hundred thousand dollars, but reaching the million-dollar mark usually involves senior management or ownership stakes.

What are some key challenges BI Developers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Developers often encounter challenges such as data inconsistency, varying data formats, and duplicate records when integrating data from different sources. Ensuring data quality and accuracy requires strong ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) skills and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with database administrators and business analysts is crucial to understand data structures and business requirements, which helps in designing effective data integration solutions. Overcoming these challenges not only improves reporting accuracy but also enhances decision-making across the organization.

What is the difference between Bi Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectBi DeveloperData Analyst

Position Summary:

As a member of the Architecture team and in direct support of the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), the Senior AI Developer/Engineer identifies, prototypes, and helps mature emerging technologies - with an emphasis on AI, machine learning, and generative AI - to improve business processes and operational efficiency. This role leads rapid proof-of-concept development, translates concepts into clear requirements, and partners with BI, Security, Data, and Application teams to design scalable, secure, and compliant solutions. The Senior AI Developer/Engineer builds reference architectures and semantic/domain models for AI services across AWS (including Amazon Aurora/RDS PostgreSQL), Amazon Q, Snowflake Cortex, and Streamlit-based applications, and supports ongoing optimization.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and deploy AI, machine learning, and generative AI solutions to solve complex business challenges and enhance operational workflows.
  • Partner with the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and scope AI/ML/GenAI use cases; define success criteria and proof-of-concept plans.
  • Prototype and deliver proofs-of-concept for emerging AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and predictive analytics.
  • Translate validated proofs-of-concept into clear functional and non-functional requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and operational runbooks for production delivery.
  • Build and maintain semantic/domain models (taxonomies, ontologies, and metadata standards) to improve AI search, retrieval, and analytics across Exchange data.
  • Develop AI-enabled applications and demos using Streamlit and APIs (e.g., FastAPI/Flask) to support internal users and operational teams.
  • Implement solutions that leverage AWS services (including Amazon Aurora/RDS PostgreSQL), Amazon Q, and Snowflake Cortex, and integrate with existing applications and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with the BI, Architecture, and Security teams to integrate AI solutions with existing systems, providing scalability, security, and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with the QA department to select AI-related testing tools and frameworks (prompt/model evaluation, regression testing) to enhance testing efficiency and accuracy.
  • Develop and implement automation solutions for the QA department to streamline testing processes for AI-enabled applications.
  • Develop and maintain APIs and microservices to support AI-driven applications and their integration with SaaS platforms.
  • Implement and optimize machine learning pipelines, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and deployment.
  • Work with data engineers to ensure high-quality data pipelines for training, evaluation, and deploying AI models.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for AI models, processes, and workflows to support internal teams and ensure knowledge transfer.
  • Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and testing of AI solutions.
  • Monitor and optimize the performance and cost of AI systems, including troubleshooting and resolving issues in production environments.
  • Ensure AI solutions comply with security, privacy, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including responsible AI guardrails and audit logging.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship on AI/ML best practices and provide emergency response for AI system issues through on-call support and monitoring escalations.

Requirements

  • Colorado resident.
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years delivering AI/ML and generative AI solutions in production environments.
  • Proficiency in Java; experience building APIs and lightweight applications using frameworks such as FastAPI/Flask and Streamlit.
  • Experience with AI/ML libraries and LLM tooling/evaluation practices (e.g., LangChain/LlamaIndex).
  • 3+ years of AWS experience, including IAM/security, networking, logging/monitoring, and data services (Amazon Aurora/RDS PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with Snowflake, including Cortex and secure data access patterns; Snowpark experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Amazon Q and RAG patterns (embeddings/vector search) and semantic/domain modeling.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and automated testing for AI-enabled applications.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills; ability to work under deadlines and during incident response/on call; ability to translate concepts into clear requirements; bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Currently working remotely.
  • The Connect for Health Colorado office is located in the North Tech Center area of Denver, near the intersection of I-25 and I-225.
  • Work schedule may include some non-traditional hours, weekends, and evening events.
  • Core office hours are typically 8 am-5 pm with some flexibility.
