What is a BI developer?

A business intelligence (BI) developer takes data and turns it into knowledge that a business or organization can use to carry out its goals. Their job is to use their data analysis skills and technical experience to develop solutions to problems, create technical reports, and make recommendations. By creating a data model or using other analytical tools, these developers can help increase productivity, provide improvements, or cut costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI developer?

To thrive as a BI Developer, you need expertise in data modeling, SQL, and data warehousing concepts, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS, as well as experience with ETL processes and possibly certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating business needs into actionable insights. These skills and qualifications enable BI Developers to deliver accurate reporting and analytics that drive informed business decisions.

What are some key challenges BI developers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Developers often encounter challenges such as data inconsistency, varying data formats, and duplicate records when integrating data from different sources. Ensuring data quality and accuracy requires strong ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) skills and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with database administrators and business analysts is crucial to understand data structures and business requirements, which helps in designing effective data integration solutions. Overcoming these challenges not only improves reporting accuracy but also enhances decision-making across the organization.

This role combines hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership, ensuring the business has access to high-quality, reliable data and insights that drive growth and operational excellence.

As the Senior BI Engineer, you will leverage Microsoft Fabric, Azure cloud services, and advanced BI tools to build scalable pipelines, semantic models, and enterprise-wide data architectures. You will set the standard for BI engineering best practices, mentor team members, and collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to deliver data products that power critical decisions. From ingestion to modeling to reporting, you will architect technical solutions that transform how we leverage data as a competitive advantage.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Lead BI Strategy & Execution
    • Translate business goals into scalable, data-driven solutions that empower decision-making.
    • Build robust, scalable data pipelines and semantic models that power advanced BI and analytics.
    • Champion data governance best practices including data lineage, cataloging, access controls, and quality monitoring to ensure trusted enterprise-wide analytics.
    • Define and enforce deployment governance standards to ensure BI assets are delivered in a consistent, reliable, and auditable manner.
    • Develop CI/CD pipelines for Fabric and Power BI assets.
    • From ingestion to modeling to reporting, you will architect and implement technical solutions.
  • Deliver Reliable, Actionable Insights
    • Ensure that reporting pipelines, daily jobs, and data validation processes operate seamlessly to provide trusted business intelligence.
    • Partner with stakeholders to design KPIs, dashboards, and analytics products that address evolving business needs while adhering to data stewardship and governance protocols.
    • Deliver visually compelling, intuitive Power BI dashboards and reports that tell a clear story and enable data-driven decisions.
    • Regularly demo new BI solutions to business teams, incorporating feedback into iterative improvements.
  • Team & Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Guide and mentor BI and data engineers in analytics as well as best practices and standards for data handling, governance, and deployment.
    • Collaborate with technical partners (Corporate technologies, Salesforce, Application Development, Data Engineering) to deliver integrated, end-to-end data products.
    • Act as a liaison between technical and business teams, ensuring solutions are both technically sound and business-relevant.
  • Long-Term Vision & Architecture
    • Own the design of enterprise-wide cloud-based BI and analytics architecture.
    • Develop and scale enterprise-wide intelligence solutions that align with the company’s growth strategy.
    • Experiment with Fabric’s evolving feature set to drive next-generation analytics.
    • Stay ahead of industry trends and recommend innovative approaches to expand BI capabilities.
  • Operational & Continuous Improvement
    • Drive backlog refinement, planning, execution, and delivery of BI projects, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
    • Manage BI platforms with a focus on performance, scalability, governance, and security.
    • Continuously evaluate and implement improvements to BI processes, tools, and methodologies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in BI engineering, data analytics, and data governance practices.
  • Significant, end-to-end expertise in Power BI — including data modeling, DAX, Power Query, workspace governance, embedding, security, deployment pipelines, and administration.
  • Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Fabric for data integration, governance, and analytics at scale.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, with experience in relational databases and cloud data warehouses (including MS SQL Server and Fabric).
  • Experience implementing data governance practices and CI/CD pipelines for BI or data platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to bridge technical and business perspectives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading BI teams or mentoring junior engineers.
  • Background in finance, real estate, or related industries.
  • Exposure to advanced analytics, predictive modeling, or machine learning applications.
