To thrive as a high-earning Software Engineer, you need proficiency in advanced programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), strong problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with modern development frameworks, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and certifications (such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Google Professional Cloud Developer) are highly valued. Job description

Brightside Health delivers life-saving virtual mental healthcare to everyone who needs it. We are powered by proprietary AI, purpose-built technology, a world-class clinician network, and a care model that rivals the best of in-person treatment. When combined with precision psychiatry and leading-edge therapeutic techniques, we're able to improve outcomes for those with mild-to-severe clinical depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. Our innovative approach has earned recognition from leading publications such as Healthline, Fortune, and Forbes, naming us 'Most Comprehensive,' and 'Best Online Therapy for Anxiety and Depression.'
We take an action-oriented, purposeful approach with everything we do and seek out team members who value collaboration and thoughtful prioritization. As a result, our organization is looking for the brightest and most innovative talent in the industry. We can promise you that, as a member of the Brightside team, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate alongside smart and driven people while growing your professional skills.
We are looking for an experienced Staff Engineer to lead technical work on our Enterprise team, reporting to the Engineering Manager, Enterprise. You'll own the systems behind eligibility, claims, billing, and payer integrations - work that directly determines whether patients understand their coverage and whether Brightside gets paid. You'll partner closely with Product, RCM Operations, and Clinical Operations to turn ambiguous, regulated problems into durable software. We're looking for someone who runs toward ownership and leaves every codebase, teammate, and process better than they found it.
What you'll be doing as Staff Engineer, RCM:
A successful Staff Engineer on this team will not just write excellent code. They will make the Enterprise product perform better.
In practice, that means you will:
  • Identify the highest-leverage problems in eligibility, claims, billing, or payer workflows.
  • Connect technical work to patient, operational, and business outcomes.
  • Use data to understand where systems are failing and whether your changes worked.
  • Build tools that help non-engineering teams move faster and make better decisions.
  • Simplify complex workflows without ignoring the realities of healthcare, insurance, and revenue cycle operations.
  • Help other engineers make better technical decisions.
  • Create clarity where there was ambiguity.
  • Ship work that is reliable, observable, and maintainable.

Requirements:
We are looking for someone who has:
  • Significant experience shipping production software, typically gained over 10+ years or through equivalent high-impact experience.
  • Strong fluency with Ruby on Rails and modern TypeScript.
  • Solid relational database experience, including schema design, query performance, data modeling, and safe migrations.
  • Experience integrating with external APIs in production, including retries, idempotency, rate limits, partial failures, observability, and vendor quirks.
  • A track record of operating autonomously on ambiguous, cross-functional problems.
  • Strong product judgment: you can reason about user needs, operational workflows, edge cases, and tradeoffs.
  • Strong data instincts: you can use metrics, logs, database queries, dashboards, and product analytics to understand what is happening and whether a change helped.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise the bar of a team through code review, design review, mentorship, technical writing, or pattern-setting.
  • Excellent written communication, including design docs, RFCs, incident write-ups, rollout plans, and clear decision records.
  • Comfort working in regulated or high-trust systems where correctness, privacy, and auditability matter.

Preferred Qualifications:
You do not need all of these, but they would help you ramp faster:
  • Experience with healthcare revenue cycle management, claims, eligibility, billing, insurance, payer integrations, or patient financial workflows.
  • Familiarity with healthcare transaction patterns such as eligibility checks, claim submission, remittance, clearinghouses, denials, or prior authorization.
  • Experience with modularized monoliths, Packwerk, CQRS, event-driven systems, or service boundaries inside larger applications.
  • Experience building internal tools for operations-heavy teams.
  • Experience designing AI-assisted workflows, especially where human review, auditability, and safety matter.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, PHI handling, SOC 2, or other regulated-industry constraints.

Benefits:
  • A competitive salary
  • Stock options so you have equity
  • Fully paid for comprehensive health care (medical, dental, vision)
  • Pet Insurance
  • Life Insurance & Short / Long Term Disability
  • 401k Plan
  • Unlimited PTO and sick leave
  • Parental Leave
  • Work remotely and whatever schedule works best for you
  • Additional memberships and perks

Work Environment & Culture
At Brightside Health, you'll join a fully remote, mission-driven team that values flexibility and impact. You'll collaborate with professionals across engineering, product, and clinical teams, all dedicated to transforming mental healthcare. Our culture fosters continuous learning, empathy, and cross-functional collaboration.
We celebrate diversity and are committed to equal employment opportunities based on merit, competence, and performance. Research shows that underrepresented groups often apply only if they meet 100% of the listed criteria-we encourage women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ job seekers to apply even if they don't check every box.
Compensation & Hiring Commitment
Final offers are determined by multiple factors, including location, experience, and expertise. If you have questions about compensation bands, please ask your recruiter.
At Brightside, we recognize that building life-changing technology for mental health is both a responsibility and a privilege. We set high standards while ensuring every team member is valued, trusted, and empowered in an environment driven by inclusion and impact.
