Bess Project Manager information

What is a BESS project manager?

A BESS Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role involves coordinating with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards. BESS Project Managers also handle stakeholder communications and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle. Their expertise is crucial for integrating large-scale energy storage solutions into electric grids or renewable energy facilities.

How does a BESS project manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams during the project lifecycle?

As a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Manager, you will regularly collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure seamless project execution. This includes leading meetings to align project objectives, resolving technical or logistical issues, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and safety standards. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll often act as the main point of contact between internal teams, external vendors, and clients to keep the project on track and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, electrical engineering, and renewable energy systems, typically supported by a relevant degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project), energy storage technologies, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills are vital for coordinating multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

Job description

SOLV Energy is a leading provider of infrastructure services to the power industry, designing, building and maintaining utility scale solar, battery storage and high voltage substation projects nationwide.

Job Description Summary:

The SVP of High Voltage leads SOLV Energy's High Voltage construction business unit, holding full P&L accountability for the safe, on-schedule, and on-budget delivery of substations, switchyards, gen-tie and transmission lines, and high/medium voltage interconnection scope across SOLV's utility-scale solar, BESS portfolio, and direct to utility customers. The role owns HV strategy, estimating, preconstruction, operational execution, organizational capability, and customer/utility relationships, and partners closely with the PV, BESS, and Transmission business units and the Infrastructure shared services functions (project controls, finance, and business development). This is a senior leadership role responsible for scaling a self-perform and strategically subcontracted HV organization to support SOLV's growing interconnection-driven pipeline, and direct to utility customers, while managing the schedule, performance, and health of all HV projects.
This role is fully remote. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

  • Manage the HV estimating and preconstruction teams
  • Sign off on all proposals for HV,
  • Set HV strategy and growth targets aligned with SOLV's Infrastructure pipeline and corporate objectives.
  • Define and execute the self-perform vs. subcontract strategy for substation, switchyard, and transmission scope.
  • Partner with shared services on bid strategy, and risk-adjusted pricing for HV scope.

Operational Execution

  • Direct execution across a multi-project HV portfolio, ensuring delivery to schedule, budget, quality, and contractual commitments.
  • Own the HV stage gate discipline from preconstruction handoff through energization, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Manage long-lead-item (LLI) procurement strategy and authorization for transformers, switchgear, breakers, and protection equipment - including LNTP decisioning to protect customer outage and energization windows.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and corrective-action discipline on schedule, quality, and cost variances.

Safety & Quality

  • Champion an industry-leading HV safety culture, with rigorous adherence to NFPA 70E, arc flash, LOTO, and energized-work protocols.
  • Hold field and project leadership accountable for safety performance as the unit's first operating priority.
  • Ensure QA/QC programs meet utility, EOR, and AHJ requirements through testing, commissioning, and energization.

Customer, Utility & Interconnection

  • Serve as the senior HV relationship owner with customers, utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and AHJs.
  • Oversee interconnection coordination, utility witness/energization milestones, and protection & control scope alignment.
  • Manage EOR and AVL relationships and resolve engineering/equipment-approval issues that affect HV scope.

Organization & Talent

  • Build and scale the HV organization - project management, field leadership, engineering coordination, and craft - to meet pipeline demand.
  • Develop bench strength and succession across HV leadership roles.
  • Standardize HV SOPs, tools, and project controls in partnership with the Infrastructure shared services model.

Integration & Cross-BU Collaboration

  • Partner with the SVP of BESS and Transmission leadership to coordinate HV scope on integrated solar-plus-storage and transmission projects.
  • Support M&A integration of acquired HV/transmission capabilities, including process, systems, and org alignment.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements:

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in high voltage / substation / transmission construction, with utility-scale or large industrial project exposure.
  • Demonstrated P&L or senior operational leadership over a construction business unit or large portfolio.
  • Deep technical command of substation, switchyard, and transmission line construction; protection & control; testing, commissioning, and energization.
  • Proven track record delivering complex HV projects safely, on schedule, and on budget.
  • Strong utility, ISO/RTO, and AHJ relationship management experience, including interconnection and energization processes.
  • Expert-level HV safety leadership (NFPA 70E, arc flash, LOTO, energized work).
  • Experience managing LLI procurement risk and equipment supply chain constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in renewable EPC (utility-scale solar and/or BESS) interconnection scope.
  • Self-perform HV construction leadership.
  • PE license, PMP, or equivalent technical/management credentials.
