What is behaviour change and what does a behaviour change specialist do?

Behaviour change refers to the process of helping individuals, groups, or communities alter their habits, attitudes, or actions. A behaviour change specialist designs and implements strategies to encourage positive behaviours, such as improving health, increasing safety, or adopting sustainable practices. They use techniques from psychology, social science, and communication to identify barriers and motivators, tailoring interventions to specific audiences. Their work is common in public health, environmental campaigns, and organizational change initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Behaviour Change Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behaviour Change Specialist, you need a solid grounding in psychology, behavioural science, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or certification in behavioural science or public health. Familiarity with behaviour change frameworks (like COM-B, TDF), survey tools, and data analytics platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and motivational interviewing skills help build rapport and effectively guide individuals or groups through change. These skills are crucial for designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions that drive sustainable behaviour change.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Behaviour Change roles, and how can they be addressed?

Behaviour Change professionals often encounter challenges such as resistance to change, difficulty in sustaining long-term engagement, and communicating effectively with diverse audiences. To address these, it's important to use evidence-based strategies, tailor interventions to specific populations, and foster strong relationships with stakeholders. Regular monitoring, feedback loops, and adapting approaches based on data can help improve outcomes and maintain motivation within target groups.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the ongoing enterprise change and adoption strategy that spans transformation initiatives, both internal and client-side.
  • Drive clear communications and proactively identify the priorities and needs of diverse sets of Royal Caribbean Group stakeholders.
  • Translate complex technical changes into clear, compelling narratives that connect to value and business impact.
  • Partner with teams to identify communication gaps, measure engagement, and adapt content based on feedback and analytics, tying communications effectiveness to tangible business outcomes.
  • Build influence and advocacy programs, identifying change champions and enabling them to drive adoption within their teams.
  • Proactively manage change fatigue and capability overload through targeted messaging and prioritization support.
  • Partner with the Learning, AI and Process teams to design micro-learning and bite-sized training modules that drive self-sufficiency and reinforce key behaviors.
  • Curate and publish self-service resources that enable on-demand learning.
  • Collaborate with Mission Control and Execution and Strategy Teams across Newbuild to synchronize communications with delivery plans, milestones, and pilots.

Qualifications
  • 15+ years of experience in leading large-scale change initiatives, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
  • Experience leading transformation initiatives, including technology modernization, product evolutions, and large-scale enterprise change.
  • Proven ability to craft and execute communication strategies that inspire behavioral change across diverse global teams.
  • Strong track record in internal engagement campaigns, ideally within transformation programs.
  • Deep expertise in structured change methodologies and internal communications tools.
  • Experience leading learning and enablement programs.
  • Experience advising C-suite executives in digital, marketing, CRM, or transformation contexts, with consulting experience preferred.
  • Ability to navigate in complex environments with global stakeholders.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and executive presence, with a clear understanding of business transformation and adoption cycles.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data-driven insights to refine communication strategy.
  • Degree in Communications, Organizational Change, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Certifications like CCMP, Prosci, or PMP preferred.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Project Management, or a related discipline required, with preference for coursework or experience in AI, analytics, or digital transformation.

Experience
  • 10+ years of progressive experience leading large-scale transformation, Change initiatives, or enterprise project management within complex organizations.
  • Proven track record in senior consulting or advisory roles, driving strategic change and digital adoption across multiple business units.
  • Expertise in overseeing and implementing a broad range of technology transformation initiatives, especially those involving artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and emerging digital solutions.
  • Industry background in cruise, hospitality, or major engineering/manufacturing environments is highly advantageous, though not mandatory.

Core Competencies
  • Exceptional organizational and strategic time management abilities, with a proven capacity to prioritize complex initiatives across multiple workstreams.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated experience delivering high-impact presentations and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Expert proficiency in PowerPoint and artificial intelligence tools, with hands-on experience designing and communicating AI-driven solutions.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite, as well as advanced project management platforms such as Adobe Workfront, or equivalent enterprise solutions.
  • Highly collaborative leadership style, fostering cross-functional engagement and continuous learning to drive digital transformation and innovation.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and drive business transformation initiatives, including managing change, aligning stakeholders, building capability, and implementing process improvements.
