A Tennessee special education teaching assistant (also known as a Special Education Assistant or Paraprofessional) works under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher to support students with disabilities, help implement their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Core Responsibilities: Key duties vary by specific school or student but generally include:Student Support: Providing one-on-one or small group academic assistance to reinforce lessons and help students master concepts.IEP Implementation: Assisting the teacher in implementing goals and behavior plans outlined in students' IEPs.Behavior Management: Supervising students in various settings (classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds) and assisting with behavior modification or positive reinforcement techniques.Instructional Support: Preparing lesson materials, setting up classrooms, organizing supplies, and operating equipment to supplement presentations.Documentation and Monitoring: Observing and documenting student progress, performance, and behavior, and maintaining student records and attendance information.Personal Care: In settings with students with significant disabilities, duties may include assisting with personal needs such as toileting, feeding, and other self-help activities.Collaboration: Communicating student progress or concerns with supervising teachers, and collaborating with other school professionals (e.g., therapists, guidance staff) and families.Key skills and Qualifications:Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
