Job description

As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a dynamic, strategic, and collaborative professional to serve as Assistant Director for Athletic Communications, who will promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by providing leadership for all athletic communications and storytelling initiatives. Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, this position will work in close partnership with athletics marketing to elevate the visibility and brand of Marian Athletics.
The Assistant Director for Athletic Communications oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic communications office and supervises the Sports Information Specialist, shaping and executing a comprehensive communications strategy that enhances the student-athlete experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for all athletic communications operations, including content development, media relations, and digital storytelling.
  • Serve as the primary media contact for Marian Athletics
  • Collaborate closely with athletics marketing to align messaging, branding, and fan engagement strategies across all platforms.
  • Supervise and mentor the Sports Information Specialist, fostering professional growth and operational excellence.
  • Oversee coverage of Marian's 26 varsity athletic programs, including game day operations, press releases, feature writing, and historical archiving.
  • Manage and maintain Marian Athletics' digital presence, including the official website and social media platforms, with an emphasis on engagement and brand consistency.
  • Direct all public-facing elements of home athletic events, including statistics, live stats, streaming/broadcasts, public address coordination, and in-game content delivery.
  • Produce and distribute statistics, reports, and historical data for conference, national reporting, and award recognition.
  • Represent Marian University at Crossroads League media events and meetings, ensuring compliance with conference and NAIA regulations.
  • Lead the creation of athletic publications and promotional materials in coordination with external relations and marketing.
  • Travel with athletic teams as needed to provide communications coverage.
  • Lead content creation for videoboard deliveries for football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling, and competition cheer and dance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Manage a student worker staff at games and during office hours, while maintaining a professional level with the students

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, targeting majors in communications, journalism, sports management, and sports marketing
  • Demonstrated success in collegiate athletic communications, sports information, sports marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising staff and managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard platforms and tools (e.g., Stat Crew/PrestoStats/Genius, Adobe Creative Suite, web CMS, and live streaming technologies).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of emerging trends in digital media, social media strategy, and content creation within collegiate athletics.
  • Ability to manage budgets and operate effectively within institutional resources.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University.
