Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
Spring, Summer & Fall (Field and Grounds Maintenance):
  • Maintain recreation facilities, including ball diamonds, soccer and football fields, tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts, ice rink, and other park areas.
  • Drag, till, edge, and chalk athletic fields, including batter's boxes, foul lines, pitching circles, and warning tracks.
  • Operate field maintenance equipment such as Sand Pro or ABI (preferred but not required).
  • Mow grass, pull weeds, spray for weeds, and mulch or remove leaves from fields and courts.
  • Paint and chalk field lines to meet sport specifications.
  • Water and maintain playing fields to ensure optimal playability and safety.
  • Willing to receive training on the most up-to-date trends and best practices in field maintenance.
  • Order, receive, and deliver field maintenance supplies and materials as needed.
  • Open and close recreation facilities according to schedule and usage.
  • Keep accurate records of all work completed in both analog and digital formats.

Winter (Ice Rink Maintenance and Custodial):
  • Operate the Zamboni to install and resurface ice; use the ice edger to maintain quality ice surfaces.
  • Perform general and heavy custodial work in Howard Park restrooms and Event Center during the ice season.
  • Inspect the condition and cleanliness of facilities; prioritize cleaning based on usage and custodial standards.
  • Power wash ice rink and other hard surfaces as needed.

Year-Round Responsibilities:
  • Communicate priorities and schedule changes with part-time staff.
  • Pick up litter and maintain clean, safe work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Provide courteous and effective communication with the public.
  • Perform work at heights of 10 feet or more using ladders when necessary.
  • Maintain a positive attitude, consistent performance, and adhere to best practices.
  • Learn and apply new maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays; vacations may be restricted during ice rink season.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to adapt daily to changing athletic schedules and priorities.
  • Assist with athletic field and court maintenance at other locations as needed, including Byers Softball Complex, Leeper Park Tennis Center, Boehm Pickleball Courts, Foundry Field, and other Venues Parks & Arts (VPA) sites.
  • Assist with special events or tournaments held at park facilities, including setup and cleanup as needed.
  • Provide support for seasonal community programs, such as youth sports clinics or recreational leagues.
  • Assist with minor facility repairs or improvements outside of regular maintenance duties.
  • Help coordinate inventory and storage organization of maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in occasional training sessions ro professional development workshops.
  • Support other park staff with duties during peak times or staff shortages.
  • Perform other or additional duties as apparent or assigned by supervisors to support overall department operations.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY
  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in field and grounds maintenance, as well as recreation program support.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily tasks according to the work schedule.
  • Capability to lift heavy objects, stand and walk for extended periods, and perform strenuous physical labor in various field conditions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in the safe and proper use of equipment and tools.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and relay both written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and the public.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education required.
  • One year experience in athletic field maintenance, grounds maintenance and recreation programs.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Valid Driver's license required
  • Class B CDL preferred

EQUIPMENT:
Ability to operate pickup trucks, hand and power tools, lawn mowers, weed eaters, riding mowers, field liners, and paint equipment is a must.

The role requires frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving more than 50 pounds. Visual abilities needed include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in high precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, except when operating power equipment.
