Minimum Requirements: The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.
Essential Functions of the Position: The following functions have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
  • It is the job of the assistant varsity basketball coach to carry out responsibilities as outlined by the head coach.
  • The assistant is responsible for assisting with all phases of the boy's basketball program from the elementary level to the varsity level.
  • The duties include helping with summer basketball camps, open gyms, and off-season conditioning as well as in-season practices and responsibilities.
  • The assistant coach must remember at all times that he/she is a representative of both the school and the team.
  • Duties and tasks:
  • Assist both varsity and junior varsity coaches
  • Help with all other levels when needed and available
  • Coordinate scouting schedule for the entire staff
  • Coordinate managers, statisticians and video personnel for 9th grade, junior varsity and varsity levels
  • Scout opposing teams
  • Attend post-game meetings after each varsity game
  • Be in charge of head count and equipment on bus
  • Coordinate summer leagues, camps and other activities
  • Help with open gym
  • Join I.B.C.A.
  • Attend clinics and rule meetings
  • Read current literature in basketball area
  • Turn in monthly written report on progress of the team he/she coaches
  • Have a minimum of three practices per week
  • Show respect and loyalty to the entire basketball staff
  • Follow each descriptive on coach evaluation form
  • Turn in an end of season evaluation of team and self

Secondary Functions of the Position: The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
  • Increasing knowledge in the sport by attending clinics.
  • Show an interest in your athletes by attending their other sport's contests.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Dealing with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner so as to not alienate or antagonize them

  • Policies, procedures, and functions of school operations in regards to athletics.

  • Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the

general public and staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the

community.

  • Athletic equipment to be established on an individual basis.

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the

weather.
  • Must be able to lift weight equivalent to the weight basketball equipment.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
