What is a Bariatric Program Coordinator?

A Bariatric Program Coordinator is a healthcare professional who manages and oversees all aspects of a bariatric (weight loss surgery) program within a hospital or clinic. Their responsibilities include coordinating patient care, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, organizing educational sessions, and serving as a liaison between patients, surgeons, and other healthcare providers. They play a key role in supporting patients through the pre-operative and post-operative phases, helping to ensure a safe and effective weight loss journey.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bariatric Program Coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bariatric Program Coordinator, you need a background in nursing or healthcare, knowledge of bariatric procedures, and often an RN or allied health credential. Familiarity with patient management software, electronic health records (EHR), and accreditation standards is typically required. Exceptional organizational skills, patient advocacy, and the ability to educate and motivate patients are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure effective program management, positive patient outcomes, and compliance with regulatory standards in bariatric care.
