What is a banking software engineer?

Banking Software Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the banking and financial industry. Their work includes creating secure platforms for online banking, payment processing, fraud detection, and transaction management. They ensure that banking software complies with industry regulations and is robust against security threats. These engineers collaborate closely with business analysts and other IT professionals to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of banks and their customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a banking software engineer?

To thrive as a Banking Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or Python), a degree in computer science or a related field, and knowledge of financial systems and regulations. Familiarity with core banking platforms, databases (like Oracle or SQL Server), and experience with secure software development practices are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and addressing complex banking requirements. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and compliant banking solutions that support critical financial operations.

What are some common challenges faced by banking software engineers when integrating new technologies with legacy banking systems?

Banking Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating modern solutions with legacy banking systems, such as outdated codebases, strict security requirements, and regulatory compliance constraints. These systems can be difficult to modify without risking downtime or errors, which requires careful planning, thorough testing, and close collaboration with IT and security teams. Additionally, engineers must ensure that new technologies do not compromise data integrity or disrupt critical banking operations, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

Job description

DNB is Norway's largest bank, serving more than two million customers every day. We provide a full range of financial services across personal banking, business banking, asset management, pensions, and more.

Behind every digital interaction is a platform built to be secure, reliable, and scalable. Every day, billions of NOK move through our systems, and our engineering teams build the foundations that make those experiences possible.

Our team

The Channel Capabilities tech family consists of three platform teams responsible for the shared foundations behind DNB's digital customer channels:

  • Nucleus – DNB's modern web platform
  • Digital Platform – foundational platform capabilities
We're looking for experienced Software Engineers to join the Nucleus team and help shape the future of web development at DNB.What we build

Nucleus provides the core capabilities that enable modern web development across the bank. Rather than building customer-facing features, we build the platform that hundreds of engineers rely on to deliver them.

Our platform includes:
  • A serverless runtime platform on AWS that composes independently deployed microfrontends through self-service configuration.
  • Frontend discovery and runtime orchestration services.
  • Authentication and authorisation integrations.
  • Shared tooling, libraries, and CI/CD workflows that establish the golden path for development, testing, deployment, observability, and code quality.
  • Platform abstractions that support multiple brands, products, markets, and authenticated customer journeys.

Our work spans frontend, backend, infrastructure, developer experience, and cloud platform engineering. We solve problems that require balancing performance, reliability, security, developer productivity, and long-term maintainability.

The platform serves multiple types of consumers: engineering teams building applications, product teams delivering customer journeys, and ultimately millions of end users. Building solutions that work well for all of them is what makes the role both technically challenging and rewarding.

Although our platform is technology-agnostic by design, our current ecosystem includes React, TypeScript, Node.js, Vite, AWS, Terraform , and modern cloud-native technologies.

As a Software Engineer, you will
  • Design, build, and evolve the shared capabilities that power DNB's web platform.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and stakeholders to shape platform direction and technical strategy.
  • Take ownership of complex technical problems from design through implementation and production.
  • Design scalable architectures spanning APIs, databases, caches, queues, cloud infrastructure, and distributed systems.
  • Build self-service platform capabilities that enable engineering teams to develop and deploy independently.
  • Continuously improve developer experience through tooling, automation, libraries, and CI/CD.
  • Evaluate technical trade-offs and make pragmatic decisions that balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability.
  • Collaborate across teams to build reusable platform capabilities that solve common engineering challenges.
  • Mentor colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute to a strong engineering culture.
We're looking for someone who has:
  • From mid-level experience as a Software Engineer or Platform Engineer, building and operating production systems at scale
  • Strong expertise in modern web development with TypeScript, React, and Node.js
  • Deep understanding of full-stack web architecture, including server-rendered applications, APIs, authentication and authorization, performance optimization, caching, debugging, profiling, and observability
  • Experience building and operating cloud-native applications on AWS, Azure, or similar cloud platforms, together with modern DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Experience building shared platforms, developer tooling, libraries, or self-service capabilities that enable other engineering teams
  • The ability to evaluate technical trade-offs and design solutions that remain maintainable as technologies and requirements evolve
Experience with the following is an advantage:
  • Microfrontends and distributed frontend architectures
  • Server-side rendering (SSR), client-side rendering (CSR), and React Server Components (RSC)
  • Internationalization (i18n) and multi-brand or multi-tenant applications
  • Modern build tooling and bundlers such as Vite, Rolldown, esbuild, or Webpack
  • Event-driven and serverless architectures
  • Distributed tracing, monitoring, and observability
  • Highly available and multi-region cloud architectures
  • Developer tooling, package publishing, and library authoring
We're also looking for someone who:
  • Enjoys solving challenging technical problems together with others
  • Has a platform mindset and is motivated by enabling other engineering teams to succeed
  • Can dive deep into technical details while keeping customer and business outcomes in mind
  • Takes ownership, shares knowledge, and continuously looks for better ways of working
  • Communicates clearly in English, both written and spoken (Norwegian is an advantage)
  • Uses AI as a productivity tool while maintaining a deep understanding of the systems they build and the ability to explain technical decisions
  • Holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience
Why join us?

Joining Nucleus means working on one of Norway's largest web platforms. You'll help define how web applications are built across DNB, influence the experience of hundreds of engineers, and contribute to digital services used by millions of customers every day.

What's in it for you?

Challenging tasks that allow you to grow professionally, competitive terms, a strong engineering culture, and good career opportunities. We offer good pension conditions, employee terms on DNBs products, insurance schemes, access to resorts in Norway, sports, cultural and other activities plus a wide range of discount schemes. In addition, knowledge and experiences are our most important assets, so you will have the opportunity to participate in courses and conferences such as JavaZone and NDC, both to build your own competency and to represent DNB externally. We also have flexible working hours, extra days off and reduced working hours from May to August (summertime).

If you're excited by platform engineering, distributed systems, developer experience, and modern web architecture, we'd love to hear from you.For questions about the position, please contact:
