What is a banking software engineer?

Banking Software Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the banking and financial industry. Their work includes creating secure platforms for online banking, payment processing, fraud detection, and transaction management. They ensure that banking software complies with industry regulations and is robust against security threats. These engineers collaborate closely with business analysts and other IT professionals to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of banks and their customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a banking software engineer?

To thrive as a Banking Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or Python), a degree in computer science or a related field, and knowledge of financial systems and regulations. Familiarity with core banking platforms, databases (like Oracle or SQL Server), and experience with secure software development practices are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and addressing complex banking requirements. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and compliant banking solutions that support critical financial operations.

What are some common challenges faced by banking software engineers when integrating new technologies with legacy banking systems?

Banking Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating modern solutions with legacy banking systems, such as outdated codebases, strict security requirements, and regulatory compliance constraints. These systems can be difficult to modify without risking downtime or errors, which requires careful planning, thorough testing, and close collaboration with IT and security teams. Additionally, engineers must ensure that new technologies do not compromise data integrity or disrupt critical banking operations, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

Job description

We're an independent European digital product studio with a strong track record of delivering market-defining strategies and products for enterprises and governments. With about 200 talented people across three countries, premium AI capabilities and a diverse portfolio of international clients, we define, design and ship high-quality digital products, strategies and software. From global cloud-based platforms and large-scale apps to medical devices, banking software and augmented reality experiences. In a nutshell: if it lives and breathes digital, itโ€™s what we do best.

Become a part of our team

At In The Pocket, you join a multidisciplinary team of designers, engineers, strategists and data specialists who care about the work as much as the people they work with. We work in small, autonomous teams that stay close to our clients and their users, and we give everyone the space to take ownership, speak up and grow. Youโ€™ll learn from colleagues across our studios, ship products that reach thousands or even millions of people and help shape what digital can do for leading organisations in Europe.

What youโ€™ll do
  • As a part of the team, you'll be taking part in the continuous development of the products that are in the care of your team.
  • Day to day, this means developing new user stories, fixing bugs, creating & reviewing pull requests, documenting your work (code comments, readme, confluence,..), performing research, making suggestions for product improvements and communicating clearly about your progress.
  • Together with your colleagues, you'll be making sure the product meets all functional and non-functional requirements.
  • As an engineer, you understand that producing clean, readable, and testable code is always a priority.
  • Use AI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) in your development workflow to enhance code writing, support code reviews, and improve productivity.
Who you are
  • Strong knowledge of C# and .NET 6+ (3+ years).
  • Good working knowledge of Docker.
  • Familiarity with at least one cloud platform (Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Amazon Web Services).
  • Use AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) to support your daily development work and improve code quality.
  • Exposure to database technologies such as Redis, MongoDB, or InfluxDB.
  • Some experience with messaging and broker systems (Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ, Kafka).
  • Familiarity with Terraform, Go, or Elastic Search is a plus.
  • You hold a master or bachelor degree in Computer Science/Informatics (or equal through a proven track record).
  • You have a good understanding of common software engineering practices, like OOP principles, modern design patterns, test-driven development, continuous integration and continuous deployment.
  • You value clean code and clean architecture principles, and strive to produce clean, readable and testable code.
  • You're eager to learn new things, share your knowledge, adapt to change and learn from past experiences.
  • You're able to work effectively in a team and are always open to feedback from your teammates.
  • You understand the importance of application security and data security, and know how that affects your job.
  • You communicate fluently in Dutch and English.
What we offer

Joining In The Pocket means becoming part of a team that shapes the future of our clientsโ€™ businesses across Europe. Hereโ€™s what you can look forward to:

  • Youโ€™ll start with a permanent contract in a role that comes with responsibility and the opportunity to make a real impact from day one.
  • We offer a competitive salary that reflects your experience and the value you bring.
  • Our benefits package has you covered with hospitalisation and group insurance, meal vouchers, a phone subscription, and more.
  • Youโ€™ll have a mobility budget that lets you decide how to get around, your way.
  • Life at In The Pocket isnโ€™t just about work, we host team events throughout the year to celebrate, connect, and have fun together.
  • Learning never stops here, so after six months, youโ€™ll receive a dedicated learning and development budget to keep growing your skills and exploring new horizons.
