Job description

We are seeking an experienced Controller / Accountant to join a growing large-scale site development and construction company. This position will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, maintaining accurate financial records, managing job-related accounting, and providing management with timely financial reporting and analysis.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who is organized, detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Construction or site development accounting experience is preferred, but not required. Candidates with strong general accounting experience and the ability to learn the construction industry will be considered.

Experience with QuickBooks Desktop is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Process invoices, vendor payments, customer billings, and collections.
  • Perform bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
  • Maintain the general ledger and perform month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Monitor cash flow and assist with cash-flow forecasting.
  • Prepare financial reports and provide accounting information to ownership and management.
  • Review expenses, transactions, and account activity for accuracy and proper classification.
  • Maintain accurate customer, vendor, and financial records.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables and payables.
  • Coordinate with outside CPAs, auditors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial professionals as needed.
  • Assist with tax preparation, audits, and year-end reporting.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles and company policies.
  • Identify accounting discrepancies and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist management with financial analysis, profitability reviews, and business planning.

Construction / Site Development Accounting Responsibilities

Construction or site development experience is preferred but not mandatory. Experience in any of the following is a strong plus:

  • Job-cost accounting
  • Construction project accounting
  • Tracking project costs and profitability
  • Cost coding and expense allocation
  • Accounts payable and receivable related to construction projects
  • Contractor and subcontractor billing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent accounting experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Controller-level or senior accounting experience is a plus.
  • QuickBooks Desktop experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial statements.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, AP, AR, and month-end close.
  • Strong Excel skills, including formulas, sorting/filtering, pivot tables, and financial reporting.
  • Construction, site development, excavation, utilities, heavy civil, or related industry experience is preferred but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also working effectively with management and operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial information.

However, industry experience is not a requirement. A strong accountant from another industry with excellent accounting fundamentals, QuickBooks Desktop experience, and the ability to learn project-based accounting can be successful in this role.
