Job description

The banding line operator oversees the accurate packaging of all coils processed by the slitters on the banding line.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Adheres to all safety protocols outlined in the Employee Handbook for the protection of personnel and facility.
  • Follows attendance policies detailed in the Employee Handbook.
  • Abides by the packaging schedule as instructed by the supervisor.
  • Operates automatic banders efficiently.
  • Provides guidance to support personnel as needed.
  • Trains line helpers in equipment operation for their designated tasks on the automated banding line.
  • Other duties as assigned.ย 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

High school education or GED required.ย  Team member must have the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.ย  Must be able to also meet the physical requirements of the job including the ability to lift 50 pounds and work on your feet on a concrete floor for the entire shift.ย  Team member must also be able to effectively communicate with others and work well in a team environment.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:ย 

  • Position demands prolonged periods of standing, walking, and operating machinery.
  • Capacity to endure repetitive tasks and maintain focus for extended periods.
  • Ability to hear warning signals and communicate effectively in a noisy environment.
  • Clear vision is necessary to inspect materials and read text, gauges and instruments accurately.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during operations.
  • Operators must be capable of making quick decisions to optimize processes and minimize downtime.
  • Effective communication is essential for coordinating with team members and reporting any issues promptly.
  • Maintain orderly work areas and adhere to production schedules.

EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS:ย 

This individual must be capable of obtaining a hi-lo license and proficient in utilizing various tools and equipment including a tape measure, band breaker, pneumatic bander/crimper, hand bander, hand cutters, staple gun, electric shears, and nibblers. Additionally, they should be skilled in operating a jib crane, utilizing an ID/OD calculator wheel, and running a computer tag program.

WORKING CONDITIONS: ย 

The primary work environment is within a steel manufacturing facility, which may include:

  • Exposure to moving machinery, heavy equipment, and sharp objects.
  • Work areas may be subject to fluctuating temperatures, including hot and cold conditions, depending on the season.
  • Loud noise from machinery and equipment operation.
  • The presence of dust, debris, and airborne particles typical of an industrial setting.
  • Adherence to strict safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with the manufacturing process.

SUPERVISION AND CO-WORKERS/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:ย 

Supervision and/or co-worker assistance are readily available. Attendance is closely monitored, as unscheduled absences may jeopardize meeting customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

CONSEQUENCES IF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS NOT PERFORMED

Failure to follow established safety rules and procedures may result in loss of position or termination of employment.

Failure to meet the requirements of the Attendance Policy will result in termination.

Failure to observe safety procedures in material handling may result in serious injury up to fatality and/or damage and loss of material or property.

Failure to process charts in priority order may result in production delays or customer delivery delays, which may in turn result in the loss of business.

Failure to follow proper operating procedures may result in excess scrap which may in turn result in production delays or customer delivery delays.ย  This may result in decreased profitability and/or the loss of business.

Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortage through loss of material or improper billing of the customer.

Failure to follow customer specifications may result in rejection of delivered material which in turn results in rework or loss of business.
