Job Summary
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elective Tutor supports high school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by facilitating collaborative learning, guiding inquiry-based discussions, and helping students develop the academic, organizational, and critical thinking skills necessary for success in rigorous coursework, college, career, and life. AVID Tutors serve as mentors and role models who foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitate small-group tutorial sessions using AVID's inquiry-based tutorial process.
  • Guide students in developing higher-level thinking skills by asking probing questions rather than providing answers.
  • Support students in identifying points of confusion and developing strategies to solve academic challenges independently.
  • Encourage student engagement, participation, collaboration, and self-advocacy.
  • Assist students with organization, note-taking, study skills, time management, and goal-setting strategies.
  • Foster a growth mindset and promote college and career readiness among students.
  • Build positive relationships with students and serve as a mentor and role model.
  • Collaborate with the AVID elective teacher to support student learning and tutorial implementation.
  • Participate in training and professional learning related to AVID methodologies and best practices.
  • Monitor student progress during tutorials and provide feedback to the AVID teacher as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and adhere to district policies and procedures.
  • Support a classroom environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect for all students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the AVID program.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma required; current college enrollment or degree preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting student achievement and academic success.
  • Experience working with youth, tutoring, mentoring, or teaching preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions and encourage critical thinking.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AVID or college-readiness programming.
  • Experience supporting students with organization, writing, and study skills.
