Position Overview: AVID Tutor
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • Days: 2-3 days a week (Wednesday, Friday, plus one more)
  • Compensation/benefits: $19.00 per hour

District One91 secondary schools offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a college and career prep program designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. AVID serves all students by ensuring they acquire the organizational and study skills needed for them to be successful. Students learn academic strategies to develop critical thinking skills and ask probing questions. AVID Tutors support in the AVID elective class by guiding collaborative study groups, providing organization and critical thinking support, and generally developing relationships with students that foster a connectedness to school and the school community.
AVID Goals:
  • Support students in rigorous coursework
  • Teach academic and social skills not targeted in other classes
  • Provide intensive support with in-class tutors and a strong student/teacher relationship
  • Create a positive peer group for students
  • Develop a sense of hope and personal achievement through hard work and determination
AVID Elective Class:
In the AVID elective class, students learn skills that will help prepare them to be successful in advanced courses in both high school and college. Students focus on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and organization. Twice a week, tutors will come into the AVID classroom to help answer questions that students have about difficult topics. As part of the course, students will also explore potential careers and even visit colleges and universities! Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. Determination is a key component of the AVID program.
