Function / Position Summary
The AVID Mentor will support students enrolled in their assigned classroom(s) by facilitating AVID's Ten Step Tutorial Process. In addition, they will serve as peer role models to students. Maintain professionalism and confidentiality within the school and the community.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the AVID classroom teacher, the AVID Mentor will form small student collaborative learning groups.
  • Be familiar with students' textbooks and materials utilized in the identified course subject area.
  • Evaluate Tutorial Request Forms (TRF's); student binders (planners, notes, etc.).
  • Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students who are working to improve academically and want to attend college.
  • On tutorial days, AVID Mentors will complete a written reflection of their tutorial experience.
  • Attend AVID Tutorial training.

Education
  • Must be a current School District U-46 11th or 12th grade high school student.
  • On track to graduate from high school on time.
  • Must have at least a cumulative six semester GPA of 3.5.
  • Must have completed or are currently enrolled in an Advanced Placement Course.

Experience / Knowledge
  • Ability to work well with high school (and middle school) students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must have high problem-solving ability.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.

Physical Demands
  • Indoors in a busy school environment.
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • May be required to leave assigned classroom and participate in tutoring-related training.
  • Public contact requiring appropriate apparel.
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.

Terms of Employment
  • This is a part-time, classified position without benefits. Hours will vary depending on site needs (up to 10 hours per week).
  • Salary is $13.00/hr.
