What Is an Automotive Service Writer?

As an automotive service writer, you work at a vehicle service center, and your primary responsibilities are to inspect customer vehicles, such as light trucks and cars, to determine their working condition and then calculate how much any necessary repairs would cost. Your job duties include talking to the customer to find out what needs to be repaired, conducting visual inspections of a vehicle’s engine and other systems, and writing a report of your findings to include a list of recommended services and repairs. You can also find automotive service writer jobs at government agencies and corporations that own large fleets of vehicles. Car dealerships with automotive service departments hire automotive service advisors as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automotive Service Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Service Writer, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong customer service skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with shop management software, estimating tools, and basic computer systems is typically required. Excellent communication, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with customers and collaborate effectively with technicians. These skills ensure smooth workflow, accurate service documentation, and high customer satisfaction in a fast-paced automotive environment.

How does an Automotive Service Writer typically collaborate with technicians and customers during the repair process?

An Automotive Service Writer acts as the communication bridge between customers and technicians. They gather detailed information about vehicle issues from customers, relay this information clearly to technicians, and keep both parties updated throughout the repair process. Service Writers also review completed work with technicians to ensure accuracy before explaining repairs and associated costs to customers, ensuring transparency and customer satisfaction. Effective collaboration requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

What are Automotive Service Writers?

They are responsible for listening to customer concerns about their vehicles, communicating those concerns to mechanics, estimating repair costs, and explaining recommended services to customers. Service Writers ensure that customers receive accurate information, schedule repair appointments, and help maintain customer satisfaction throughout the repair process.

Job description

Now Hiring: A Certified Rock Star (Service Advisor)

Autohaus Import Service – Raleigh, NC

Are You the Headliner We've Been Waiting For? ??

Hey there, I’m Doug Rogers. My wife and I opened Autohaus over 23 years ago right here in Northwest Raleigh. We’re now one of the largest and fastest-growing independent repair shops in the area. Business is booming — and we need a Rock Star Service Advisor to match our pace.
Not an “opening act.” Not a backup singer. We’re talking about a main-stage performer. Someone who can crush it in a high-energy, high-volume shop, thrive under pressure, and still deliver a show-stopping experience to our clients.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay Range: $80,000.00 – $120,000.00+ per year

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 10-hour shifts, NO weekends

License Required: Valid Driver’s License

Work Location: In person (Raleigh, NC)

?? Here’s How You Know You’re the One:

- “100% commission-based pay” makes your pulse quicken—in a good way.

- You’re a natural closer, with a history of generating $100K–$150K per month in ethical, high-integrity sales.

- The faster the tempo, the better your performance.

- You have a solid 3+ years of experience as a Service Advisor (dealership or independent shop—doesn’t matter if you’ve got the chops).

- You show up like a pro, with a love for the trade and a dedication to doing right by the client, the techs, and the team.

?? The Money Talk:

- 8% commission on gross profit you generate. Period.

- If you can't make at least $100K a year here, this probably isn’t your stage.

- Our top performers earn well over $120K annually. We’ve got the proof.

?? What’s Backing You:

- Top-tier technicians quoting real, legitimate work for you to present.

- Proven processes, systems, and support that keep you performing at your best.

- Zero corporate nonsense. We run this place like a family, not a factory.

?? Benefits That Hit All the Right Notes:

- 100% Paid Employee Health Insurance (yes, real coverage that doesn’t wreck your wallet)

- Dental, vision, life insurance

- Paid time off and retirement plan

- Employee discounts

- 10-hour shifts, no nights, no weekends

?? Want Front-Row Access to an Interview?

Send us your resume AND a quick intro explaining your current situation and what makes you stage-ready. That little step might just be your all-access pass to the front of the line.
Thanks for reading to the end. If you’re our Rock Star — we can’t wait to hear your sound check.
