What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in automotive quality?

To thrive in Automotive Quality, you need a solid understanding of quality control processes, automotive manufacturing standards, and often a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with quality management systems like IATF 16949, Six Sigma methodologies, and tools such as SPC (Statistical Process Control) and FMEA is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals collaborate and resolve quality issues efficiently. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring product reliability, meeting regulatory standards, and maintaining customer satisfaction in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced by automotive quality professionals and how are they typically addressed?

Automotive quality professionals often encounter challenges such as managing strict compliance with industry standards, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and addressing unexpected quality issues on production lines. These challenges are typically addressed by implementing robust quality management systems, conducting regular audits, and fostering open communication among engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams. Proactively analyzing data and trends also helps in identifying potential issues early, enabling swift corrective actions and continuous improvement.

What is automotive quality?

Automotive quality refers to the standards and processes used to ensure that vehicles and their components meet safety, reliability, and regulatory requirements. An automotive quality professional is responsible for developing and implementing quality control procedures, inspecting products, identifying defects, and working with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve processes. Their goal is to minimize defects, ensure compliance with industry standards such as ISO/TS 16949, and maintain customer satisfaction. They may also analyze data, conduct audits, and facilitate corrective actions to address quality issues in automotive production.

What is the difference between Automotive Quality vs Automotive Manufacturing?

AspectAutomotive QualityAutomotive Manufacturing
Primary FocusEnsuring product quality, compliance, and defect preventionProducing vehicles efficiently and meeting production targets
Required SkillsQuality control, inspection, root cause analysisAssembly processes, machinery operation, production planning
Work EnvironmentQuality labs, inspection stations, supplier sitesFactory floors, assembly lines, manufacturing plants
CertificationsISO 9001, ASQ certifications, automotive quality standardsLean manufacturing, Six Sigma, OSHA safety

Automotive Quality professionals focus on maintaining and improving vehicle quality through inspections, testing, and compliance with standards. In contrast, Automotive Manufacturing roles center on the efficient production of vehicles, managing assembly lines and manufacturing processes. Both roles are essential in the automotive industry but differ in their core responsibilities and work environments.

At Skyworks, you will find a fast-paced environment with a strong focus on global collaboration, minimal layers of management, and the freedom to make meaningful contributions in a setting that encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. The Staff Quality Engineer (QE) serves as a senior technical leader, responsible for driving product quality, enhancing manufacturing process capability, and ensuring robust quality systems and control throughout the fab.  The work will directly support the wafer fabrication operation that produces Compound Semiconductor RF and mobile communication devices including HBT, BiFET, and BiHEMT technologies. This role partners closely with Operations, Engineering, and other groups to reduce defectivity, improve yield, and ensure compliance with customer and industry expectations (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949, automotive, or other applicable standards). The Staff QE leads high‑impact quality initiatives, owns complex problem-solving efforts using advanced statistical and engineering methodologies, and drives a data‑driven approach to continuous improvement across the fab. This position will be on-site in Newbury Park, CA supporting Wafer fab in Woburn, MA.

Responsibilities

  • Lead internal audits, support external audits, and ensure closure of findings.
    • Develop, implement, and optimize quality procedures, work instructions, and documentation.
  • Monitor key quality metrics including defectivity, yield, excursions, scrap, and customer complaints.
  • Lead cross-functional root-cause analysis using tools like 8D, DMAIC, 5-Why, or Fishbone.
  • Drive long‑term corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with measurable improvements.
  • Product transfer qualification experience.
Required Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing, wafer fab operations, yield engineering, or quality engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex RCA and implement sustained corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with statistical software and fab data systems (JMP, or Minitab).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across multiple levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, high‑volume manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge and hands-on experience with SPC, MSA, FMEA, APQP, PPAP, Process Control Plan, and 8D problem-solving methodology.
  • Results-oriented, self-driven, and goal-driven.
  • Ability to travel domestically (about 20% of the time).
Desired Experience and Skills
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of ISO9001, IATF 16949, VDA6.3 and VDA6.5 standards.
  • ASQ certified Quality Engineer or ASQ Six Sigma green or black belt certifications preferred.
