Job description

Automotive Quality Engineer – Tier 1 Manufacturing


Position Overview


We are seeking an experienced Quality Engineer to support quality performance within a fast-paced automotive manufacturing environment. This position will work closely with Production, Engineering, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and customers to resolve quality concerns, improve manufacturing processes, and ensure compliance with automotive quality standards.


The ideal candidate is a hands-on quality professional who is comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor, investigating quality issues, leading corrective actions, and driving continuous improvement.


Key Responsibilities


  • Support plant quality activities to ensure products and manufacturing processes meet customer and internal requirements.
  • Lead root cause analysis, containment, and corrective actions for internal and customer quality concerns.
  • Utilize structured problem-solving methodologies including 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, and corrective action processes.
  • Develop, maintain, and update Control Plans, PFMEAs, process documentation, and inspection standards.
  • Support APQP and PPAP activities for new product launches, engineering changes, and process changes.
  • Monitor and analyze quality performance including PPM, scrap, First Time Quality, rework, customer complaints, and other key quality metrics.
  • Work directly with Production and Engineering teams to identify process improvements and prevent recurring defects.
  • Support customer quality concerns, containment activities, corrective action responses, and customer quality portals.
  • Participate in internal, customer, and third-party quality audits.
  • Support compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, AIAG requirements, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Conduct process audits and product audits to ensure manufacturing standards are being followed.
  • Support measurement system analysis, capability studies, SPC activities, Gage R&R, and dimensional inspection requirements.
  • Assist with nonconforming material investigations and disposition.
  • Work with suppliers as needed to resolve incoming material or component quality concerns.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing scrap, defects, rework, and customer complaints.
  • Maintain accurate quality records, reports, and documentation.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or a related technical field preferred.
  • 3+ years of Quality Engineering experience within automotive or high-volume manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience working within a Tier 1 automotive supplier environment strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and AIAG requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with automotive Core Tools including:
    • APQP
    • PPAP
    • PFMEA
    • Control Plans
    • SPC
    • MSA
    • Gage R&R
    • Capability Studies
  • Strong experience with 8D problem solving, root cause analysis, containment, and permanent corrective actions.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T.
  • Experience interfacing directly with customers on quality concerns and corrective actions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable spending significant time on the manufacturing floor.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Experience


  • Experience working with automotive OEM customers such as GM, Ford, Stellantis, or other major automotive manufacturers.
  • Experience with customer quality portals and customer-specific requirements.
  • Knowledge of dimensional inspection, gauges, CMMs, and measurement systems.
  • Experience with new product launches and production ramp-ups.
  • Six Sigma, ASQ, CQE, or related quality certification is a plus.
