Automation Integration Engineer
Position Overview
The Automation Engineer will design, implement, commission and support manufacturing automation systems to improve production efficiency, quality and reliability. This role owns PLC and robot control systems, HMI and vision integrations, MES connections, and the execution of FAT/SAT and cell installations. The engineer will lead cell integration and capital improvement projects, working closely with operations, quality, and project teams to deliver robust automation solutions across multiple production cells and facilities.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, debug and maintain PLC control systems (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000) for new and existing production cells.
  • Integrate and program industrial robots (Fanuc) and coordinate robot-to-cell communications and safety systems.
  • Develop and configure HMIs and operator interfaces for intuitive machine operation and troubleshooting.
  • Implement and support vision inspection systems to ensure product quality and process verification.
  • Configure and maintain Ignition SCADA/HMI systems and integrate with plant networks and MES.
  • Lead and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT); prepare test plans, protocols and acceptance documentation.
  • Perform cell integration activities including wiring, I/O verification, commissioning, and start-up support for cell installations.
  • Manage automation and capital improvement projects: scope definition, scheduling, resource coordination, cost tracking and stakeholder communication.
  • Integrate automation systems with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for data collection, traceability and production control.
  • Create and maintain design documentation, control narratives, P&IDs where applicable, PLC/HMI code libraries, and change control records.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to maintenance and operations staff; support continuous improvement initiatives and standardization across cells.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing automation, including PLC programming and robot integration.
  • Strong experience with Allen-Bradley PLC platforms and RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000 programming environment.
  • Proven experience integrating and programming Fanuc robots and related communication protocols.
  • Experience developing and maintaining HMIs and operator interfaces.
  • Practical experience with machine vision systems and inspection integration (e.g., Cognex, Keyence or similar).
  • Experience configuring and using Ignition SCADA or similar SCADA platforms.
  • Experience planning and executing FATs, SATs and cell installations, including wiring and I/O verification.
  • Demonstrated experience with MES integration and data exchange between controls and enterprise systems.
  • Project management experience managing capital improvement projects, including budgeting and scheduling.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation and change management skills; familiar with validation and regulatory documentation where applicable.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work cross-functionally and coordinate contractors and vendors.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple facilities and support hands-on commissioning and installations.
  • Nice to have: experience in metal stamping processes and/or medical device manufacturing.
