What are some common challenges faced by audit professionals during busy season, and how can they be managed?

Audit professionals often encounter increased workloads and tight deadlines during the busy season, which typically aligns with fiscal year-end reporting. Managing multiple client engagements simultaneously and ensuring compliance with evolving regulations can be demanding. To navigate these challenges, effective time management, strong communication within the audit team, and proactive client coordination are essential. Firms usually provide training and encourage the use of audit software to streamline processes and support work-life balance.

What are audit professionals?

Audit professionals are individuals who review and assess the financial records, internal controls, and compliance processes of organizations to ensure accuracy, transparency, and adherence to regulations. They can work internally within a company or externally as part of an accounting or consulting firm. Audit professionals help identify risks, detect errors or fraud, and provide recommendations for improving business processes. Their work is crucial for maintaining public trust and supporting sound financial decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Audit Professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audit Professional, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance and certifications like CPA or CIA. Familiarity with audit management software, data analytics tools, and ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with clients. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring compliance, identifying financial discrepancies, and delivering valuable insights to stakeholders.

Job description

Position: Audit Senior (Single Audit)

Location: Hybrid โ€“ DMV Area (MD/DC/VA) | 1โ€“2 Days In Office

Compensation: up to $125k base + discretionary bonus up to 10โ€“15%

Requirements: Active CPA (or CPA eligible) | 4-6+ years public accounting audit experience | Strong Single Audit / Federal compliance background

About the Firm:

This is not your typical regional CPA firm. Founded by former Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young partners, this 150+ person, minority-owned powerhouse has spent 20+ years proving that you don't have to choose between Big 4 rigor and a people-first culture. Nationally recognized as one of the country's premier Single Audit practices, the firm brings institutional-level expertise to every engagement while maintaining the responsiveness and genuine relationships of a local firm.

With consistent year-over-year growth and a blue-chip client roster, this is a firm that is building โ€” not coasting.

The Role:

This is a career-defining opportunity for an audit professional with deep Single Audit and federal compliance expertise. As an Audit Senior or Manager, you'll lead complex engagements across government entities, nonprofits, and commercial clients โ€” backed by a team that literally helps set the standards in this space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Single Audit and financial statement engagements from planning through completion
  • Apply OMB Uniform Guidance and federal compliance frameworks across diverse client portfolios
  • Mentor and develop junior audit staff
  • Serve as primary point of contact for government and nonprofit clients
  • Collaborate with partners on quality control and technical matters
  • Contribute to firm growth and client service expansion

What You Bring:

  • 4-6+ years of progressive public accounting audit experience
  • Strong, hands-on Single Audit experience under Uniform Guidance (required)
  • Active CPA licensure in good standing (or active CPA candidate)
  • Experience with government, nonprofit, or federal program audits preferred
  • Strong project management and client communication skills
  • Big 4 or national firm background a plus โ€” not a requirement

Total Compensation Package:

  • Base Salary: up to $125k+ base (commensurate with experience)
  • Annual Discretionary Bonus: up to 10โ€“15%
  • Medical Coverage โ€” employer-contributed
  • 168 accrued PTO hours (21 days)
  • Professional development and CPE support

Ideal Candidate:

You're a technically sharp audit professional who has built real expertise in Single Audit engagements and federal compliance work. Whether you're a Senior ready to step into management or an experienced Manager looking for a firm where your specialization is truly valued โ€” this is the opportunity to join a nationally recognized practice at the top of its niche.
