What is an auction manager?

Auction Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, organization, and execution of auctions. Their duties typically include managing auction logistics, coordinating with sellers and buyers, setting up auction catalogs, handling marketing efforts, and ensuring all legal and financial procedures are followed. They may work for auction houses, online platforms, or manage specialized auctions for real estate, vehicles, art, or other goods. Strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills are essential for this role.

How does an auction manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure a successful auction event?

An Auction Manager works closely with various departments such as marketing, finance, operations, and customer service to coordinate all aspects of an auction. They collaborate with the marketing team to promote the event, liaise with finance to oversee payments and settlements, and work with operations to ensure auction items are properly catalogued and displayed. Regular communication and teamwork are essential to address challenges and ensure the auction runs smoothly from planning through execution. This cross-departmental collaboration not only helps prevent issues but also enhances the overall experience for both buyers and sellers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an auction manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Auction Manager, you need expertise in sales, inventory management, and event coordination, typically supported by experience in the auction or sales industry. Familiarity with auction software platforms, CRM systems, and online bidding tools is highly beneficial. Strong negotiation, organizational, and interpersonal skills help build client relationships and manage high-pressure events smoothly. These abilities are crucial for ensuring successful auctions, maximizing sales, and maintaining satisfied clients and bidders.

What is the difference between Auction Manager vs Auction Coordinator?

AspectAuction ManagerAuction Coordinator
CredentialsTypically requires experience in auction operations, sometimes certifications in auctioneering or related fieldsOften requires administrative or event planning experience, with fewer certification requirements
Work EnvironmentLeads the auction process, manages staff, and oversees the entire auction eventSupports the auction, handles logistics, and assists with event setup and coordination
Industry UsageCommonly employed in charity, art, real estate, and estate auctionsOften found in similar settings, focusing on supporting roles in auction events

The main difference between an Auction Manager and an Auction Coordinator is that the Auction Manager oversees the entire auction process, manages staff, and ensures the event runs smoothly, while the Auction Coordinator provides logistical support and assists with event setup. Both roles are essential in auction environments, but the Manager holds more responsibility for overall success.

What qualifications do you need to work as an auction manager?

Auction managers typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring postsecondary education in business, marketing, or related fields. Experience in sales, customer service, or auction environments is valuable, and strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills are essential. Certification is not mandatory but can enhance credibility and career prospects.

Job description

At Auction.com, we're transforming real estate. As the nation's leading online platform for buying and selling residential bank-owned and foreclosure properties, we connect buyers, sellers, and investors with innovative technology. With over $70 billion in assets, our success is driven by a culture of innovation, collaboration, and impact. We go beyond the bid-empowering our people to thrive and shape the future of the industry.
Overview
We are seeking a strategic, hands-on HRBP and Learning & Development leader to support an evolving sales organization.
The Sr. Director, HRBP and L&D contributes to company performance by partnering with Sales and Operations leaders to align talent, organizational design, and capability building to achieve key business objectives. This role blends core HRBP responsibilities, including performance and compensation consultation, employee relations, policy interpretation, engagement, talent management, and workforce planning, with end-to-end L&D ownership for sales, sales leadership, and operations development.
The successful candidate will build scalable programs that accelerate ramp time, cultivate a strong sales culture, strengthen manager effectiveness, and reinforce a collaborative, high-performance environment with a focus on exceptional employee experience.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic HR Business Partnership
Serve as a trusted advisor to Sales and Operations leaders, providing both day-to-day coaching and strategic counsel across performance management, compensation, employee relations, engagement, workforce planning, and organizational design.
Partner with leadership to assess capability gaps (role clarity, skills, behaviors, and process adherence) and translate business needs into actionable people strategies and learning roadmaps.
Ensure consistent and rigorous execution of performance management practices, including goal setting, calibration, feedback cycles, and development planning.
Lead talent reviews, succession planning, and development planning to drive retention, internal mobility, and bench strength for critical roles.
Lead and/or support annual HR cycle deliverables, including performance cycles, talent reviews, and compensation planning (merit and bonus).
Learning & Development / Sales Enablement
Design and deliver scalable Sales and Operations onboarding and ramp programs (new hire, upskilling, and role transitions) in partnership with functional subject matter experts.
Build leader and manager development experiences (coaching, feedback, performance conversations) to strengthen frontline leadership and reduce regrettable attrition.
Create and continuously improve learning content and experiences, including facilitation, workshops, playbooks, manager toolkits, and self-service resources.
Leverage AI capabilities to accelerate and enhance the creation of L&D content (e.g., sales playbooks, role-based learning paths, call coaching scripts, and microlearnings).
Support development across product, process, skills, and leadership behaviors aligned to business priorities.
Change Leadership & Transformation
Act as a change leader within an evolving sales organization, supporting shifts in segments, territories, compensation plans, and operating rhythms.
Ensure leaders are equipped with communication strategies, tools, and collateral needed to successfully drive adoption and sustain change.
Data, Insights & Program Effectiveness
Use data and insights (attrition, engagement, ramp time, quota attainment, internal mobility, and performance outcomes) to diagnose issues, prioritize investments, and measure program impact.
Establish accountability and define success metrics for programs, including adoption, proficiency, behavior change, and business results.
Qualifications
We want to set you up for success. Candidates should bring experience in the following areas:
Strong foundation in HR principles and practices, including employment law, compliance, employee relations, and performance management.
Demonstrated experience supporting Sales and/or Operations functions, with strong business acumen and ability to influence at all levels.
Exceptional communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, actionable guidance.
Proven ability to coach executives, people leaders, and employees through complex and sensitive situations, balancing empathy, compliance, and business outcomes.
Demonstrated Learning & Development experience, including needs assessment, program design, facilitation, and evaluation.
Experience building or scaling onboarding and sales readiness programs and partnering effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and subject matter experts.
Strong analytical mindset with comfort using people and business data to diagnose issues, prioritize actions, and communicate impact.
Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, regulated environment with strong program and project management skills.
Demonstrated ability to identify root causes and deliver practical, effective solutions to business and people challenges.
Proficiency with Office 365 and experience leveraging HRIS, reporting tools, and learning platforms to scale programs and measure outcomes.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality results under time constraints.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business, Education, or related field (Master's preferred).
10+ years of progressive HR experience with significant HRBP scope.
3+ years of L&D, enablement, and/or organizational development experience (or a blended role combining both).
Preferred Qualifications
Multi-site client support experience.
Experience supporting sales teams in high-growth or transformation environments.
Mortgage servicing, financial services, and/or real estate industry experience.
PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification.
