Job description

About the Role

As an Elder Law Attorney, you will advise clients on estate planning, Medicaid planning, crisis planning, and long-term care strategies. You will meet directly with elderly clients, families, and caregivers to create practical legal plans that protect assets, clarify healthcare wishes, and support care decisions. This role is ideal for an attorney who enjoys client relationships, thoughtful legal drafting, and helping families navigate urgent financial and healthcare challenges. You will join a collaborative Estates Department where your judgment, compassion, and New York elder law experience will have a direct impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise clients on Medicaid eligibility, asset protection strategies, and long-term care planning options
  • Develop and implement pre-planning and crisis planning solutions for clients and families facing urgent care needs
  • Prepare and oversee estate planning documents, including wills, trusts, healthcare proxies, powers of attorney, and related documents
  • Guide clients through nursing home placement, community Medicaid programs, and long-term care planning decisions
  • Oversee Medicaid applications and appeals with accuracy, urgency, and strong attention to detail
  • Meet directly with LegalShield members and private clients to understand their goals and recommend appropriate planning strategies
  • Work closely with families navigating sensitive healthcare, financial, and end-of-life planning concerns
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, referral sources, and internal team members
  • Provide clear, compassionate legal guidance in a way clients and families can understand and trust
  • Support the Estates Department's collaborative approach while independently managing client consultations and matters

Requirements

Must-Have:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active New York State Bar license in good standing
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing elder law and estate planning
  • Demonstrated experience with Medicaid planning, Medicaid eligibility rules, and crisis planning strategies
  • Strong knowledge of New York estate planning laws
  • Experience drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare proxies, and related estate planning documents
  • Ability to work 100% onsite in Hauppauge, Long Island, NY

Nice to Have:

  • Experience advising both LegalShield members and private estate planning clients
  • Familiarity with nursing home Medicaid, community Medicaid, and long-term care planning workflows
  • Experience managing Medicaid applications and appeals from strategy through resolution
  • Established referral relationships within elder care, healthcare, financial planning, or related professional networks
  • Long-term interest in growing within a collaborative Estates Department
