What is an associate therapist?

Associate therapists are mental health professionals who have completed their graduate education in fields like counseling, social work, or psychology and are working under supervision to gain the clinical experience required for full licensure. They provide therapy services to clients but must do so under the guidance of a licensed supervisor. Associate therapists may be referred to as associates, interns, or provisionally licensed therapists, depending on the state or country. Their role is crucial in supporting clients while they continue to develop their skills and fulfill licensure requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate therapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Therapist, you need a foundational education in mental health counseling, psychology, or social work, typically supported by a relevant master's degree and associate-level licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records, telehealth platforms, and evidence-based therapy modalities such as CBT or DBT is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and active listening are vital for building trust with clients and collaborating with clinical teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective care, maintaining professional standards, and supporting clients' mental health progress.

What types of supervision and support can associate therapists expect while working toward full licensure?

Associate Therapists typically work under the supervision of a licensed clinician, receiving regular individual or group supervision sessions to discuss cases and professional development. This support ensures that associates meet state licensing requirements and develop clinical skills in a structured, nurturing environment. Many organizations also offer training workshops, peer consultation groups, and access to experienced mentors, helping associates build confidence and competence as they progress toward independent practice.

Tired of remote-only isolation? Need a soft place to land? There's a better way to build your career. At SoLuna Mental Wellness, we built something different โ€” a sustainable, in-person group practice that's a genuine alternative to the remote-only model that leaves so many associates feeling burned out and unseen. Here, culture is the foundation. Our therapists find their professional home at SoLuna: mentored, supported in real time, and empowered to do their best work without sacrificing their wellbeing.

We're a collaborative group practice in The Woodlands offering psychiatry, psychological assessments, and therapy for individuals, couples, families, and groups. Our team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed professionals across disciplines โ€” all working together to serve our diverse Houston-area community with care that actually heals.

We're currently hiring talented, motivated LMFT-Associates who thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to grow under strong, real-time supervision and mentorship.

What We Offer
  • Competitive hourly pay (details covered at your Teams interview)
  • Free in-house, real-time clinical supervision toward full licensure โ€” one of our biggest differentiators
  • Structured compensation for admin tasks + paid CEU time
  • Flexible scheduling with genuine autonomy over your caseload and client focus
  • You work with who resonates with you โ€” so you stay fulfilled without burning out
  • Full benefits: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k), PTO, holidays, and sick time
  • Ongoing training, mentorship, and robust wellness support
  • A workplace culture rooted in respect, care, and authentic connection
The Role

Setting: Primarily in-person with telehealth flexibility. You'll assess mental health needs, develop individualized treatment plans, and provide therapy for individuals and groups. You'll coordinate care across our interdisciplinary team, support clients through grief, crisis, and life transitions, and maintain timely clinical documentation. Active participation in supervision, team meetings, and ongoing professional development is part of how we grow together here.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in marriage and family therapy, counseling, or related field
  • Current Texas LMFT-Associate license in good standing
  • Identified or willing to be assigned an LMFT-S supervisor (in-house available)
  • Strong diagnostic, clinical, and crisis intervention skills
  • Experience with EHR systems and standard office tools
  • EMDR, somatic, eating disorders, or addiction training is a plus
  • Some evening and weekend availability is a plus โ€” not a requirement

Rooted in Houston. Built for this moment. SoLuna is shaped by this city's rhythms and responsive to its needs. Our why runs deeper than a group practice โ€” we're here to make therapy more accessible, more human, and more compassionate. Our therapists aren't just providers; they're nurtured, seen, and supported to bring their full selves into the room. When that happens, something powerful unfolds. The name SoLuna honors the balance between light and dark โ€” the cyclical nature of healing. Just as the sky shifts, so do we. Mental health care that begins within.

We're creating something meaningful at SoLuna. If this sounds like your professional home โ€” apply now. We'd love to meet you.
