Job description

R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Burnside) is seeking a knowledgeable, results-driven, and enthusiastic Professional Engineer to join our Municipal Transportation Planning team. With a strong background in transportation and traffic engineering, you’ll guide and support planning, design, and construction planning activities for a variety of municipal projects.

This role offers the opportunity to help lead and further develop our transportation planning and traffic services across the GTHA. You’ll work closely with the Vice President – Municipal Transportation Planning and contribute to a dynamic team of planners and engineers.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Senior Transportation Engineer, you’ll bring expertise in roadway safety, signal operations, traffic staging, intersection performance, and intelligent transportation systems. You’ll play a key role in shaping public sector transportation planning in the GTHA.

What Success Looks Like

  • Administer contracts between owners and contractors in accordance with contract terms.
  • Lead conceptual and functional roadway designs
  • Conduct traffic operations and safety reviews for urban and rural roads
  • Manage projects involving traffic/transit signal studies, safety studies, and traffic impact analyses
  • Provide expertise in traffic signals, ITS, and connected vehicle technologies
  • Oversee design, construction, and operation of traffic signals and ITS/CV initiatives
  • Lead or participate in client meetings and stakeholder engagement
  • Drive business development for transportation planning and traffic engineering projects
  • Deliver projects efficiently and on schedule

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead and manage transportation planning and traffic engineering projects
  • Provide technical direction on signal operations, roadway safety, and traffic staging
  • Develop traffic management plans for temporary conditions and construction
  • Optimize traffic signals and transit priority systems
  • Utilize traffic engineering software (e.g., Synchro, SimTraffic, Vissim, Aimsum)
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to team development
  • Participate in proposal writing and client presentations
  • Maintain high standards of project documentation and reporting

What You'll Bring  

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario or eligibility for licensing
  • Ideally certified as a Road Safety Professional (RSP)
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering
  • Experience with Vision Zero policies and traffic calming implementation
  • Strong knowledge of traffic signal optimization and ATMS
  • Proficiency in traffic engineering software tools
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Experience mentoring and leading teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle
