Job description

Ready for a challenge?
Then Just Eat Takeaway.com might be the place for you. We're a leading global online delivery platform, and our vision is to empower everyday convenience.
Whether it's a Friday-night feast, a post-gym poke bowl, or grabbing some groceries, our tech platform connects tens of millions of customers with hundreds of thousands of restaurant, grocery and convenience partners across the globe.

About this role
The Canadian Data & Analytics function is at an inflection point. As Skip invests to become an AI-first business, the reliable cross-cloud pipelines, trusted consumption layer and engineering discipline that underpin it sit with the Data Engineering team.

As Senior Manager, Data Engineering, you'll lead a team of data and analytics engineers, plus a contractor pod, building the platforms and consumption layer that power decisions, ML and customer experiences across Skip Canada.

You'll operate at the intersection of a global AWS streaming platform and a Canadian GCP analytical estate (BigQuery, dbt, Snowplow, Tableau), partnering with Global Data Engineering, local Product & Tech and the wider DNA team.

The team and platform are mid-transformation, so this is a build role - technical leadership and team-building in equal measure. You'll bring clarity to standards and priorities, grow the team's craft and represent Data Engineering to senior stakeholders, leading, delivering and caring.

Location: Winnipeg/Toronto Remote
Reporting to: Associate Director of Data & Insights

These are some of the key components to the position:

  • Own end-to-end reliability of the cross-cloud pipeline - batch and streaming architectures and external APIs through to GCP (BigQuery, Dataflow, dbt) and consumption.
  • Lead the build-out of Canada's Gold/semantic consumption layer with data contracts and SLAs, and retire the legacy analytics warehouse.
  • Partner with the Lead Data Engineer on system design of our application databases and services, mapping the interactions critical to the warehouse.
  • Raise engineering standards across data and analytics engineering and own incident response for Tier-1 pipelines.
  • Lead, coach and grow data and analytics engineers plus a contractor pod - planning headcount, hiring and managing performance.
  • Represent Data Engineering to senior stakeholders and Global Data Engineering, translating technical trade-offs into business terms and helping the team succeed.

What will you bring to the team?

  • Hands-on command of streaming and batch platforms - Kafka/Confluent, lakehouse formats, Airflow - across a multi-cloud AWS and GCP estate.
  • Architecture and modelling mastery: led a Gold/semantic layer from scratch in a marketplace or federated org, with expert BigQuery, dbt and dimensional/medallion modelling, defending trade-offs.
  • Stood up an Analytics Engineering practice, coaching analysts into engineers on dbt modelling - incremental-vs-full-refresh trade-offs, quality gates and Slim CI for run-time/cost.
  • Sets engineering standards where they're missing - code review, CI/CD, testing, data contracts and governance.
  • A people leader who builds and develops teams, and a credible partner who explains trade-offs to stakeholders and pushes back constructively.
  • Thrives in ambiguity, a builder not a maintainer, honest and direct.
  • Nice to have: ML exposure (Vertex AI, SageMaker).
