How much do associate rn jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for associate rn in Pittsburgh, PA is $55,923.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $37,400.00 and $71,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate RN, you need a solid grounding in clinical nursing practices, patient care, and a current registered nursing license, typically earned through an associate degree in nursing (ADN). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), basic medical equipment, and hospital protocols is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and empathy are vital soft skills to provide effective patient support and collaborate with healthcare teams. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care, which is critical to patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate RNs when transitioning from school to a clinical setting?

Associate RNs often encounter challenges such as managing a fast-paced workload, adapting to shift work, and handling high patient acuity during their transition from academic to clinical environments. Building confidence in clinical decision-making and prioritizing patient care tasks while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams are key hurdles. Many new RNs find that seeking mentorship, utilizing orientation programs, and actively communicating with experienced nurses can greatly ease this transition and promote professional growth.

What are Associate RNs?

Associate RNs are registered nurses who have earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), typically through a two-year college program. They are fully licensed to practice as registered nurses after passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Associate RNs perform many of the same duties as nurses with a bachelor's degree, including patient care, administering medications, and collaborating with healthcare teams. While some employers may prefer or require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Associate RNs are qualified for a wide range of nursing positions, especially in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.

What is the difference between Associate Rn vs Licensed Practical Nurse?

AspectAssociate RnLicensed Practical Nurse
Required CredentialsAssociate Degree in Nursing (ADN), RN licensePractical Nursing diploma or certificate, LPN license
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, long-term care, outpatient facilitiesLong-term care, nursing homes, clinics, hospitals
Job ResponsibilitiesAssessments, care planning, administering medications, patient educationBasic patient care, vital signs, medication administration under supervision

The main difference between an Associate Rn and a Licensed Practical Nurse is the level of education and scope of practice. RNs typically hold an associate degree and have a broader scope of responsibilities, including care planning and assessments. LPNs have a practical nursing diploma and focus on basic patient care under supervision. Both roles are vital in healthcare settings, but RNs generally have more advanced training and responsibilities.

3 Days A Week, 12+ Hour Shifts

No On Call

*Training Provided*

"GIVE LIFE" in a truly rewarding career with DaVita!!Dialysis experience is preferred BUT NOT required!!We offer a very robust PAID TRAINING PROGRAM with HANDS ON TRAINING!!Build long term relationships with patients & make a difference everyday! This position will be based at our dialysis site location within the Premier Washington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Primary work schedule will be 3-4 days a week with some required travel to other SNF clinics within your region (depending on business and patient needs). Alternating Saturdays will also be required

DaVita Kidney Care is bringing our industry-leading clinical quality to patients on-site at skilled nursing facilities (SNF) through a new team called DaVita Skilled Nursing Dialysis Services.

Approximately 10% of all dialysis patients reside in a SNF and are transported to dialysis three times a week placing a significant burden on patients and adding significant avoidable costs to the health care system. DSD Services teammates will have access to all the capabilities and resources DaVita has to offer, and will work to quickly leverage these to develop the infrastructure and rapidly grow the new service line.

Ideal teammates will have experience in dialysis, get energized by a start-up type environment and improving the lives of patients, and have a track record of finding ways to Get Stuff Done (GSD). Teammates must be comfortable working autonomously and have demonstrated the ability to collaborate with cross-functional resources across the organization.

What you can expect:

In this role, you take responsibility for the complete ongoing care of each patient to ensure their dialysis treatment stays on track. DSD RNs will troubleshoot, and make sound decisions for our patients related to their dialysis treatment and will occasionally partner alongside the SNF staff to coordinate care.

Primary work schedule will be 3-4 days a week with some travel to other SNF clinics within your region (depending on business and patient needs). Alternating Saturdays will also be required. Your impact on the lives of our patients and their families will be felt every day.

Patient education. RNs by training, are Educators. As a DSD Services RN, you will be provided the opportunity to conduct impactful and meaningful education to patients and their families in the SNF setting.

Direct Patient Care: The RN’s primary responsibility is to independently demonstrate best practice techniques and deliver optimal dialysis care. The role includes supervising Dialysis Technician who are tasked with delivering tandem care to meet the capacity and efficiency goals of the program.

Complexity - DSD Dialysis care is a complex but fulfilling service line. Meeting and/or exceeding clinical outcomes are the goals and multitasking is an expectation to meet the needs of the service, the patients and our SNF partners.

Autonomy and Critical Thinking. Provide comprehensive patient care in an independent setting. Plan to be on your toes at all times. You use your mind constantly. You apply your "core" nursing skills to assess, diagnose and implement complete care plans as you look at the whole patient. There's a lot to track and manage and the joy comes in witnessing how your care impacts patients' lives.

Some details about this position:

  • Your training will include a combination of classroom and hands-on learning, through DaVita’s award-winning training programs

  • Training may take place in a facility or a training clinic with a class of new teammates other than your assigned home clinic

  • Hours of work may vary during the training period; however, you will typically be working between 32-40 hours/week during training

  • May be asked to support other local SNF dens

You must have:

  • Previous Chronic Hemodialysis, or Acute Dialysis experience is preferred but not required.

  • PAID HANDS ON TRAINING PROGRAM

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice; Minimum of 12 months of RN experience

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (A.D.N) from accredited school of nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N); three-year diploma from accredited diploma program may be substituted for nursing degree
