JOB SUMMARY:
Scope of Work - Main duties, settings, geography, reporting relationships, other relationships:

This is an entry level engineering position which provides engineering support for the development, analysis, evaluation, measurement, and verification (EM&V) of clean energy solutions and Distributed Energy Resources which are part of the Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) and Non-Pipes Alternatives (NPA) portfolios at Avangrid's New York operating companies, NYSEG and RG&E.

This position will work in New York and assist with the success of existing and future utility programs and their resulting benefits. The job requires the candidate to interpret and apply company, industry, local, state, and national standards and ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. It is also required that the candidate will ensure safe and efficient operation of the project measures and resolve technical issues affecting the project and distribution system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the ongoing engineering and technical support of the NWA and NPA
    group through:

    • Working closely with Engineer and Lead Analyst to investigate, configure scenarios, and run models that can help to identify NWA/NPA technologies to address system needs.

    • Supporting NWA/NPA procurement activities which may include:

      • RFP Development

      • Developer Q&A

      • Developer Selection

      • Other activities

  • Provide technical support for NWA/NPA Engineer to create technical and business case support to NWA and Distribution Planning group to facilitate the incorporation projects within Integrated System Planning (ISP) model.

  • Assist with the engineering analyses of distribution system needs and technical review of NWA/NPA proposals. Support distribution system reliability studies, contingency plans, review capital budget project proposals, prepare net present value economic analyses and or Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) modeling.

  • Assist with determining the correction of circuit electrical operating deficiencies, etc. Conduct capacity analyses of key substation equipment.

  • Assist with analyzing the impact of developer-interconnected distributed generation for projects. Assist with identifying the necessary system improvement and/or construction projects associated with interconnecting NWA/NPA DER on the distribution system and provide all necessary documents for those projects including cost projection and analysis for required distribution system improvements associated with NWA/NPA projects.

  • Support the development of process improvements for identifying NWA/NPA as well as the suitability screening process' for NWA/NPA programs.

  • Assist with maintaining and updating the BCA handbooks and spreadsheets to calculate benefits for NWA/NPA projects.


Skills and Requirements


The following skills and associated competency levels are desired of those candidates seeking a position in Non-Wires Alternatives. However, offsetting industry and other relevant technical skills will be considered for candidates without previous experience in these NWA/NPA/UTEN activities (e.g., T&D Engineering, T&D Planning, P&C, etc.).

Education & Experience Required:

  • BS or BT degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is required. Additional consideration is given to applicants with Advanced Degrees or Certifications (e.g. MSEE, PE, etc.)

  • 0 - 2 years of experience (industry related)

  • Knowledge of electric distribution system design and modeling

  • Knowledge of gas distribution system design and modeling

  • Basic knowledge of engineering theories, practices, and procedures.

  • Able to work in a team environment and learn key business processes.

  • Preference given to previous experience working with and across functional departments including electric engineering, gas engineering, operations, energy control center, etc.

  • Quantitative skills with complex modeling; preference given to previous benefit/cost modeling experience.

  • Basic understanding of utility operations and positive stakeholder interactions, with experience working with and across functional departments (Projects, Regulatory, Investment Plan, Distribution & Transmission Planning, others).

  • Interest in sustainability and emergent utility technologies.

  • Desire to support advancement of New York's clean energy & climate goals.
