Job description

The Senior Project Engineer is an experienced project development and design engineering position. This Associate provides technical analysis and oversight for project development activities related to site surveys, energy analysis, savings calculations, scope development, technical reports, and project design engineering.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Technical

  • Applies experience-based knowledge of engineering principles and practices
  • Provides technical analysis and review for design-build projects related to HVAC, controls, lighting, and other building systems
  • Act as an internal and external technical resource for complex and advanced engineering projects
  • Performs expert design engineering, including but not limited to the following:
    • Building heating/cooling loads
    • Building envelope
    • Zone airflow
    • Pump and fan design (configuration, flow, head/pressure, motor size, etc.)
    • Duct and pipe sizing and layout
    • Equipment selection (pumps, fans, motors, drives, chillers, boilers, etc.)
    • Drawings and project documentation
    • Technical Reports
    • Project submittals
    • Managing RFI process for projects
  • Leads technical project development engineering efforts of multiple Associates on large scale projects
  • Leads site audit activities to identify existing conditions of the facility and Associated equipment
  • Assist in initial site visits and vetting of new project opportunities
  • Drives improvement of data capture and analysis technology for the project engineering team
  • Develops data logging plans by specifying appropriate equipment, point lists, trend interval, trend durations, and subcontractors for effective monitoring of systems and facility operations
  • Deploys and retrieves data logging equipment to monitor, understand, and troubleshoot existing system operations
  • Analyzes various data sources providing expert trend analysis to identify any deviations that require further investigation, troubleshoot system deficiencies, and proposes sequence improvements or service recommendations to the appropriate internal or external customer
  • Leads scope identification, equipment selection, and defines overall project basis of design
  • Correlates the energy model simulation to real world control sequences and setpoints
  • Specifies expert level control sequences of operation to improve efficiency, operational reliability, and interoperability between disparate building systems
  • Performs expert energy modeling using simulation software such as Trane TRACE 700, hourly spreadsheet analysis, or other simplified spreadsheet analysis
  • Customizes software and spreadsheets to deliver high quality technical results, reports, standardized tools, and presentations
  • Performs system layout, equipment selections, basis of design, and detailed system design for project engineering and cost estimating efforts
  • Manages creation of project documentation drawings in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or MS Visio
  • Manages work with third party consulting engineers by creating scopes of work, identifying quality consultants, and reviewing work product to ensure quality results
  • Interfaces closely with consulting engineers performing subcontract energy or design engineering to provide consultants with relevant data and to review consultants' work product
  • Supports commissioning and performance assurance activities by conducting post-implementation site visits, troubleshooting performance issues, and revising energy models or calculations to reflect design or facility operational changes
  • Leads creation of detailed scope documents suitable for use in construction pricing efforts across a range of disciplines including mechanical, electrical, controls, lighting, equipment, TAB, commissioning, building envelope, and structural
  • Demonstrates understanding of construction pricing, processes, and schedules
  • Assists Project Managers with scope development and project management tasks
  • Assists Preconstruction Manager with prime contract and change order estimating
  • Ensure projects apply with all applicable building codes during the development phase
  • Lead application process for utility rebates and incentives for construction projects
  • Provide continual research and promote awareness of available utility rebates and incentives for HVAC, IAQ, energy, and sustainability projects

Administrative

  • Ability to manage and perform technical tasks independently
  • A self-starter with a high energy level
  • Works with sales team to develop complex projects.
  • Managing internal engineering resources to keep projects on track. This includes both engineering and non-engineering personnel
  • Aligns scopes with customer expectation, contractual requirements, and identifies needs for breakout scopes
  • Sign and Seal technical documents for projects including drawings, specifications, and commissioning reports where required
  • Desires hands-on project development and customer contact
  • Communicates effectively with the skill and ability to interface professionally with internal and external customers
  • Responsible for scheduling, site access requirements, PPE requirements, and leading customer interaction for engineering site visits
  • Creates and manages project deliverables, milestones, budgets, and schedules
  • Monitors progress of project level engineering budgets and schedules, providing appropriate feedback when issues arise
  • Challenges existing processes looking for innovative ways to improve operational efficiency
  • Supports Project Managers and Project Superintendents with construction administration
  • Assists with project document administration in Procore
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, legal regulations, and recommended best practices.
  • Collaborate with all Associates to uphold the company's mission and values.
  • Must be able to work outside normal work hours/weekends as required
  • Travels to project or job sites with occasional overnight stays
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a four-year college or university
  • 10 years of experience in project engineering.
  • Expert proficiency with load analysis and energy analysis tools such as TRACE 700, System Analyzer, and Chiller Plant Analyzer
  • Expert knowledge of site auditing, data logging, and troubleshooting systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office programs and AutoCAD required
  • General familiarity with computer systems and ability to learn software applications as required
  • Experience with the following are required: Trane TRACE 700, TRACE 3D Plus
  • Experience with the following are a plus: Revit, MS Visio, MS Project, MS Dynamics SL or similar accounting software, Procore or similar construction management software
  • Valid Driver License required
  • Professional Engineer required
  • CEA, CEM, PEM are a plus
  • Ability to read, interpret information, and communicate effectively with management, contractors, co-workers, and customers is required
  • Ability to apply perform technical engineering calculations is required
  • Understanding of project financial calculations is required
  • Ability to define problems
  • Collect and interpret data
  • Review facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to pass drug screening
  • Ability to prove US employment eligibility
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

The Associate occasionally must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This position works in a typical office environment with occasional visits to job sites job sites, which includes outdoor work, work in mechanical/equipment rooms, and work in customer occupied spaces. During the job site visits, the Associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
