Job description

ATC Automation is seeking an early-career Jr. Associate Applications Engineer to join our growing team in Cookeville, TN. In this role, you will support the development of cost estimates and proposals for custom automation systems based on customer requirements. You will review customer drawings, production goals, and technical specifications with guidance from senior team members to help determine project feasibility and develop practical automation solutions.

The ideal candidate has 2โ€“3 years of engineering experience in automation, machine design, manufacturing, or a related technical environment. You should be eager to learn custom automation and machine-building concepts, comfortable working with SolidWorks and Microsoft Office tools, and able to collaborate with engineering, applications, sales, and leadership teams to develop clear proposal materials, basic 3D concepts, and customer-facing documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing machine and tooling layouts for proposed automation systems and custom equipment solutions.
  • Work with customers and internal teams to help define, evaluate, and refine assembly and manufacturing solutions.
  • Support the preparation of preliminary and final cost estimates using Excel and related estimating tools.
  • Help develop estimated operator task times for proposed manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Prepare written proposal content using Word, SolidWorks outputs, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Contribute to the development of cost-effective assembly machine, automation system, and test equipment concepts.
  • Research new technologies, products, and processes relevant to proposed machine concepts.
  • Support technical proposal reviews and customer presentations by preparing concepts, visuals, and supporting information.
  • Create clear written and visual documentation, including basic 3D renderings and supporting sales materials.
  • Manage assigned tasks and priorities to support customer deadlines and sales objectives.
  • Travel periodically as required to support customer meetings and project activities.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • 2โ€“3 years of experience in automation, machine design, manufacturing engineering, or a related technical environment.
  • Exposure to custom automation quoting, cost estimating, or proposal development is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SolidWorks.
  • Foundational understanding of engineering principles, machine design, geometric tolerancing, and technical drawings.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical systems used in automated machinery.
  • General familiarity with electrical and pneumatic control systems.
  • Familiarity with machining and fabrication processes, including lathe work, milling, boring, and welding, is helpful.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and customers.
  • Ability to present technical information clearly and respond to questions with support from senior team members as needed.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
