What Does an Associate Attorney Do?

Associate attorneys are early career lawyers who work for law firms to gain experience and hone their skills after completing law school and passing the bar exam for their state. Under the guidance of an experienced attorney or a partner in the firm, associate attorneys assist with cases by conducting legal research and writing reports, legal briefs, and other documents. Associate attorneys also negotiate with colleagues from other law firms, participate in jury selection, and help argue cases in court.

What is an Associate Attorney?

An Associate Attorney is a licensed lawyer who works at a law firm and typically has less experience than partners or senior attorneys. Their responsibilities often include conducting legal research, drafting documents, meeting with clients, and assisting with case preparation. Associate Attorneys usually work under the supervision of more senior lawyers and are on a partnership track, meaning they may eventually be considered for partnership in the firm. Their role is crucial for supporting the firm's legal work and gaining experience in various areas of law.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a state bar license, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document management systems, and e-discovery tools is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure effective case preparation, compliance with legal standards, and successful collaboration with clients and colleagues.

What are some common challenges faced by associate attorneys in their first few years, and how can they overcome them?

Associate attorneys often encounter challenges such as managing a heavy workload, adapting to the fast-paced environment of a law firm, and learning to balance billable hour requirements with professional development. Building strong organizational and time-management skills is crucial to handle multiple cases and deadlines effectively. Additionally, seeking mentorship, actively communicating with senior attorneys, and asking for feedback can help associates navigate complex matters and grow professionally within the firm.

Job description

Now Hiring: Remote Associate Attorney | California | No Billables | No Sales

New Gig Solutions is proud to partner with a long-standing, mission-driven law firm that has been helping individuals facing financial hardship since 2011. With operations in multiple states and a proven, client-first approach, the firm is now hiring a Remote Associate Attorney based in California to support its continued growth.

Position: Associate Attorney
Location: Fully Remote (Must reside in California)
Compensation: $105,000 + Full Benefits
Bar Admission: Must be licensed and in good standing with the California Bar
Experience: 1โ€“2 years of litigation or negotiation experience

About the Firm:
Since 2011, this firm has supported thousands of working-class clients through legal and financial challenges, including debt resolution, creditor disputes, and tenant rights. Their mission-driven model centers on empathy, fairness, and client advocacyโ€”delivered with professionalism and a strong commitment to work-life balance.

About the Role:
This is a meaningful opportunity for attorneys who want to make a differenceโ€”without the pressure of billable hours, business development, or partnership politics. You'll receive a consistent caseload, full remote setup, and structured mentorship from day one.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage client matters from intake through resolution
  • Negotiate with creditors and opposing counsel
  • Handle legal issues related to financial hardship, debt collection, and tenant rights
  • Use the firm's Salesforce-based case management system
  • Collaborate with experienced attorneys and support staff

What You Won't Do:

  • No billable hour requirements
  • No marketing or sales responsibilities
  • No client chasing or fee generation
  • No weekend or late-night workโ€”standard 9-to-6 schedule

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Active California Bar license and current residency in California
  • 1โ€“2 years of relevant legal experience (litigation or negotiation)
  • Background in consumer law, financial services, or personal injury is a plus
  • Empathetic, organized, and passionate about helping others
  • Fully committed to a full-time position (not running a side practice)

What You'll Receive:

  • Competitive salary ($105K) and comprehensive benefits
  • Fully remote work setup: laptop, dual monitors, accessories
  • Access to the firm's Salesforce portal for efficient case tracking
  • Ongoing mentorship and support from managing attorneys
  • A consistent, meaningful caseloadโ€”without the stress of traditional law firm demands

This is an excellent opportunity to join a firm that values purpose-driven work, stability, and true work-life balance.
