Assistant Vice President, Operations- Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
In close partnership with operations leadership, the Assistant Vice President, Operations (AVP) will exercise strategic oversight and operational direction across key institutional initiatives. The AVP will directly support and scale the operational footprint of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) campus by driving the development, management, and implementation of core programs, while advancing the broader mission of the RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH) system. Serving as a crucial liaison and leader, the AVP will partner with clinical and administrative leaders across both ambulatory and inpatient settings to ensure the seamless delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care. Furthermore, the AVP will lead continuous improvement efforts focused on driving employee engagement, elevating the overall patient experience, maintaining rigorous quality standards, ensuring strong financial stewardship, and optimizing operational efficiency across all care environments.
As the AVP of Operations, a typical day might include the following:
  • Aligning Strategy & Standards: Meet with hospital leadership to design and integrate high-standard patient care programs, policies, and community-focused care plans aligned with the RWJBH system mission.
  • Patient Experience Reviews: Analyze and act on recent patient satisfaction data to refine service delivery across ambulatory and inpatient care.
  • Driving Quality & Compliance: Lead division-wide performance improvement initiatives alongside senior and clinical leaders to continuously evaluate and elevate patient care standards.
  • Ensuring Regulatory Readiness: Oversee quality monitoring programs and improvement projects to guarantee ongoing compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Managing Ambulatory Operations: Direct daily financial and business activities to ensure ambulatory programs run smoothly and cost-effectively on the RWJUH campus.
  • Pursuing Growth & Standardization: Work with the VP to develop new business opportunities, streamline HOPD clinical workflows to improve patient throughput, and optimize the ambulatory revenue cycle.
  • Attending High-Level Committee Meetings: Actively participate in Joint Management Council and Operations Committee meetings to contribute to broader hospital planning.
  • Building Collaborative Relationships: Meet with physicians, nursing staff, executive peers, and regional/national healthcare leaders to foster trust and evaluate strategic partnerships.

  • Business: You oversee the complete business and financial strategy for campus ambulatory areas, standardizing clinical workflows in HOPD departments to boost patient throughput, elevate patient experience, optimize the revenue cycle, and unlock new revenue streams.
  • Hospital Community and External Affairs: You build trust and credibility across internal and external networks, serving as an influential voice on executive committees (like the Joint Management Council) and working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, senior leaders, and regional partners to guide institutional growth.

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must hold a Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or Public Health Administration, alongside a minimum of ten (10) years of healthcare leadership or operational experience, ideally within a strong health system environment. The ideal candidate will combine a strategic, results-driven mindset with advanced financial acumen to optimize operational efficiencies, solve complex problems, and drive business strategies in a rapidly changing environment. Exceptional leadership, ethical judgment, and change management skills are essential to effectively motivate teams, navigate complex group dynamics, and foster trust across multidisciplinary groups.
