JOB MISSION

Pacific Lifestyle Homes is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support and oversee the company's accounting operations within a dynamic residential construction and land development environment. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, coordinating audit and compliance activities, supervising accounting staff, and supporting the Controller in managing the day-to-day accounting function.


The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting expertise, leadership experience, and a proven ability to improve processes, mentor team members, and support operational and financial objectives across the organization. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting & Oversight

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. 
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close activities, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. 
  • Review reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules prepared by accounting staff. 
  • Assist the Controller with consolidated financial reporting and management reporting packages. 
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of financial records and reporting processes. 

Financial Analysis & Operational Support

  • Perform detailed financial and variance analysis related to construction costs, land development activities, and operational performance. 
  • Provide recommendations to management regarding financial trends, cost controls, and process improvements. 
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve financial visibility and accountability. 

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Coordinate annual external CPA audits and serve as a primary liaison with auditors. 
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and regulatory reporting requirements. 
  • Assist in maintaining and improving internal accounting controls and financial procedures. 
  • Support loan, bank, and lender reporting and compliance requirements, and other financial reporting obligations as needed. 

Construction & Land Development Accounting

  • Oversee accounting processes related to: 
    • Job cost accounting 
    • Land development capitalization 
    • Construction accruals 
    • Community and phase reporting 
    • Work-in-process analysis 
  • Review project costs for accuracy and proper financial treatment. 

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and support accounting staff. 
  • Review work performed by team members to ensure accuracy and consistency. 
  • Assist with training, workflow management, and development of accounting personnel. 
  • Support department initiatives and continuous process improvement efforts. 

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, reporting accuracy, and internal controls. 
  • Support accounting system enhancements and reporting automation initiatives. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. 
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience. 
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience required. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting. 
  • Experience coordinating external audits. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and accounting systems experience. 
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills. 
  • CPA license or CPA candidate strongly preferred. 
  • Experience in residential construction, homebuilding, land development, real estate development, commercial real estate, or manufacturing.
  • Experience with job costing and construction accounting systems. 
  • Experience managing accounting close processes and staff workflows.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

We are an in-person culture with a core work schedule of 8:00am - 5:00pm, including a required daily morning huddle that begins at 8:00am in-office. While schedules may vary based on business need, this role typically operates in a high-demand environment and may require extended hours, often averaging above a standard 40-hour workweek.
