Title: Varsity Field Hockey - Assistant Coach
Department: Athletics
Reports To: Head Coach, Athletic Director
Compensation: Stipend range of $3,600-$4,500
Position Summary:
Massabesic High School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Varsity Field Hockey - Assistant Coach to join our athletic department. The ideal candidate will assist in developing a competitive and character-driven program aligned with our school's athletic and academic mission. This position supports the Head Coach in all aspects of the team, including training, game preparation, mentoring student-athletes, and promoting sportsmanship and school pride.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous coaching experience (high school or college level) or playing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of rules, techniques, and strategy.
  • Meets RSU 57 and MPA eligibility requirements:
    • First Aid Training
    • CPR Training
    • Concussion Management Course
    • Heat Illness & Acclimatization Course
    • Fundamentals of Coaching Course
    • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course
    • Protecting Students from Abuse Course
    • Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Course
  • RSU 57 Background Check
  • Valid Maine Criminal History Record Check and fingerprinting clearance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with planning and conducting daily practices and training sessions.
  • Teach sport fundamentals, game strategy, and conditioning techniques.
  • Supervise student-athletes during all team activities, ensuring safety and discipline.
  • Support students' academic, personal, and social growth.
  • Participate in staff meetings, film review, scouting, and strategic planning.
  • Contribute to team fundraising, community outreach, and team-building events.
  • Promote a culture of sportsmanship, integrity, and Mustang pride.
  • Help manage equipment inventory and distribution.
  • Ensure compliance with MPA, district, and school athletic policies.
  • Travel with the team to away games and events.

Working Conditions
  • Must be available for evening and weekend practices/games.
  • May work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
  • The role requires physical activity and ability to demonstrate proper techniques within each sports discipline.

Evaluation
Annual performance review conducted by the Head Coach and Athletic Director in accordance with district evaluation procedures.
Language and Communication Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents pertinent to position, i.e. athletic policy manuals, handbooks, and state guidelines
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and correctly, in speech and writing, to parents, coaches, and athletes
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, athletes, coaching staff, and the community

Mathematical Skills:
  • Understanding of budgeting and accounting practices

Physical Demands:
While performing the essential duties of the position, the employee is continuously required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee will frequently use demonstration techniques while coaching that require physical activity, such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, swinging an implement, and general body movement. The employee will need to carry items that may be heavy (in excess of 20 pounds). The employee will occasionally need to sit for long periods of time and frequently travel by bus. The position may require the employee to work extended hours to meet the demands of the position.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally will be excessive. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Reasonable accommodations will be made to allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
