Job description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Sugar Team Leader provides leadership for the Sugar & Molasses Handling Department. Operates heavy equipment, conducts frequent inspections assigned to the department to ensure that safe and approved work practices are followed. The Sugar Team Leader will assist in training and onboarding new employees assigned to the department.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides hands-on guidance and mentorship to team members, serving as a bridge between employees and supervisors. Supports daily operations by addressing challenges, fostering collaboration, and ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures. Promotes a positive work environment, assists in employee development, and helps drive team success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct regular inspections of all heavy equipment assigned to the department and provide updates to the manager on any issues that may impact operations or require higher-level attention.
  • Assist with training and motivating team members in a manner that sustains a high-performance team.
  • Communicate urgent matters to the appropriate chain of command.
  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment that includes pay loaders, forklifts, trains, jockey trucks, and trailers.
  • Assist in overseeing, tracking, and documenting the loading, unloading, and storage of sugar in the warehouse and molasses in storage tanks.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with Corporate and OSHA standards, ensuring all work is performed according to established safety procedures.
  • Performs other related projects and assignments as business dictates.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and delegation skills with the ability to work effectively with subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to teach and mentor others in a positive and constructive manner.
  • High energy, enthusiastic, and committed to upholding company values.
  • Proficient in computer use and technology.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while remaining calm and focused under pressure.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish preferred.

LICENSES:

  • Driver's License Class E required.
  • CDL or other heavy equipment operator certifications preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a leadership role.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular attendance is required during scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy environments, depending on the weather.
  • Capable of performing tasks in various positions (overhead, kneeling, reaching, crawling, and in small spaces) and lifting to 50 pounds.
