What is an assistant strength coach?

Assistant strength coaches are professionals who support head strength and conditioning coaches in developing and implementing training programs to improve athletes' performance, strength, and overall fitness. They assist in supervising workouts, teaching proper exercise techniques, and monitoring athletes' progress. Additionally, assistant strength coaches help ensure athletes' safety during training sessions and may also contribute to administrative tasks, such as maintaining equipment and recording performance data. Their work is crucial in preparing athletes for optimal performance while reducing the risk of injury.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an assistant strength coach?

As an Assistant Strength Coach, your daily responsibilities include designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs, supervising athletes during workouts, monitoring progress, and ensuring proper exercise technique to reduce injury risk. You will also collaborate closely with head coaches, athletic trainers, and other staff to tailor programs to specific sports and individual athlete needs. Your role is crucial in helping athletes achieve peak performance and in fostering a positive, disciplined training environment. Consistent communication and adaptability are essential as you support both team and individual goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant strength coach?

To thrive as an Assistant Strength Coach, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, program design, and injury prevention, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field and certifications such as CSCS or SCCC. Familiarity with strength and conditioning equipment, performance assessment tools, and athlete management software is often required. These skills ensure safe, effective training programs and foster athlete development and performance improvement.

  • Lifting 300 Pounds In the eighties and nineties, we served people who hoped to lift three hundred pounds someday, and everyone else who wanted to come along and that made perfect sense.
  • Avoiding Weighing 300 Pounds But the world changed. Literally. Americans became overweight and obese. With obesity at epidemic levels in America, I thought I could serve more people by helping people who wanted to avoid weighing 300 lbs. I learned that weighing 300 lbs was a psychological event. It was one thing to watch weight creep up through the 200s, but the first time somebody stepped on a scale and the first digit was a 3-300 pounds! Oh my gosh, there were a lot of wake-ups at that time.
  • Focusing on Strength AgainToday, we're shifting to serving people who hope to maintain the strength it takes to stand up on their own, and everyone else who wants to come along.Turns out science backs up what we've always believed.

Our customer service mantra is "treat each member and guest the way we would want our own mother treated if she was in a gym 500 miles away, dealing with strangers. We would want her treated with love, respect and kindness."
