Job description

The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will be responsible for the design and implementation of year-round, sport-specific training programs for Alfred University intercollegiate athletic teams comprised of approximately 600 student-athletes with growth to 700. The Head Strength & Conditioning Coach will effectively train groups of student-athletes on techniques to improve strength, fitness, speed, agility, and flexibility.  The coach must be able to motivate athletes and instill competitiveness while functioning in a team environment.  The Head Strength & Conditioning Coach will collaborate with sport coaches and athletic trainers to ensure that student-athlete strength and conditioning training programs meet the goals of the team and individual.   
The Head Coach will manage the operations, budget, equipment, and supplies of the Joyce & Walton Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center.   
In addition, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will train, supervise, and schedule part-time assistant strength and conditioning coaches, graduate assistants, and student workers.   
Salary: $62,354-$64,853 Annually
Essential Functions:
  • Supervise part-time assistant strength & conditioning coaches, graduate assistants, and student workers
  • Consult with head coaches to determine team and individual strength, fitness, and conditioning needs
  • Design and implement sport-specific training programs for teams while using technology to assist with tracking of workouts
  • Emphasize programming on injury prevention and performance enhancement of student-athletes
  • Design and implement sport-specific speed and agility programs, as needed by applicable teams
  • Implement testing methods, based on current literature, to assess strength and fitness levels of athletes at appropriate times
  • Demonstrate and monitor proper exercise techniques that will be utilized in the strength and conditioning program, including but not limited to, Olympic lifts, strength and power training, speed/movement functional skills, flexibility, and conditioning
  • Collaborate with AU athletic training staff to develop and implement injury prevention programs and accommodate injured student-athletes to facilitate return-to-play
  • Educate student-athletes on proper nutrition, sleep, recovery, and other healthy living aspects
  • Maintain an environment in the Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center that is marked by the highest priority on safety, attention to detail, respect for all, commitment to improving, and teamwork
  • Oversee the general maintenance of the Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center to ensure it is both safe and impressive for current and prospective AU student-athletes
  • Support department initiatives (i.e., Annual Golf Outing, The Alfy’s)
  • Manage social media accounts for AU Strength & Conditioning
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule involving early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends
  • Must remain current on research in the strength and conditioning field as it relates to college student-athletes
  • Supports and assists in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives
  • Supports and assists in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students
  • Maintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the AU experience
  • Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment
  • Participates in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications-Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Master’s degree in exercise science or related field required
  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field required
  • Applicants must hold a nationally recognized strength and conditioning certification (i.e., NSCA-CSCS, CSCCa, USAW) with CSCS certification preferred
  • Must have three or more years of experience in a collegiate setting as a strength and conditioning coach
  • Must be CPR/AED and First Aid certified by the time of employment
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach, lead, and counsel college student-athletes
  • The candidate must be a person of integrity and high ethical standards
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for the position
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are an asset to this position
  • The candidate must have knowledge of NCAA Division III rules related to strength and conditioning
  • Knowledge of technology related to strength and conditioning is essential
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office suite) are required
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This is a position that requires physical activity and the ability to lift 50 lbs.  The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate proper exercise techniques and verbally instruct student-athletes in functional movement exercises.  
Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required.  Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be available.  The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus.  The Campus is in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individuals.
