Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the daily supervision of the Engineering and Maintenance Department, ensuring the efficient operation of all hotel facilities.
  • Support the coordination and supervision of engineering staff by providing technical guidance, task assignments, and performance follow-up.
  • Participate in the implementation of preventive and corrective maintenance programs to protect hotel assets and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Assist in controlling departmental operating expenses, supporting budget management and the efficient use of resources and materials.
  • Support compliance with local, state, and federal regulations applicable in Puerto Rico, including safety codes, OSHA requirements, permits, and hotel industry standards.
  • Supervise work performed by external contractors, ensuring quality, timely completion, and adherence to hotel standards.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving technical issues affecting guest and employee areas, prioritizing guest satisfaction and operational continuity.
  • Support the planning and execution of minor capital projects, improvements, or facility upgrades.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with other departments (Housekeeping, Front Desk, Security, and Operations) to coordinate work and minimize guest impact.
  • Analyze equipment failures and propose practical and timely solutions, including the procurement of parts, tools, and scheduling of work shifts.
  • Ensure that team members comply with uniform standards, professional appearance, and confidentiality of hotel information.
  • Comply with and enforce hotel safety and security policies; report accidents, injuries, or unsafe work conditions, and participate in required safety training and certifications.
  • Maintain positive working relationships, support the team in achieving shared goals, and respond appropriately to employee concerns.
  • Stay informed of best practices and emerging technologies relevant to hotel maintenance, sharing recommendations with the Chief Engineer as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Proven 4 to 6 years of experience in engineering or building maintenance, preferably in hotels or service-oriented properties, with experience supervising technical staff.
  • Solid knowledge of construction and maintenance trades, including Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, Plumbing, and General Building Maintenance.
  • Experience supporting operating budget administration, cost control, preventive maintenance programs, and coordination of minor projects.
  • Practical knowledge of applicable facility regulations and safety standards, including OSHA, EPA, ADA, CFC, and NFPA, with the ability to support compliance efforts.
  • Hands-on experience in the following areas: Air conditioning and refrigeration, Electrical and mechanical systems, Pneumatic/electronic systems and controls, Plumbing, Carpentry and finishes, Kitchen equipment and general building maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle operational and emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, as well as to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and perform physical work as required.
  • Fully bilingual (Spanish and English) with effective verbal and written communication skills.
