Job Description

The Assistant Director, Housing Operations & Projects serves as a primary user and administrator of the Universityโ€™s student housing software (StarRez). This position is responsible for the operational integrity and workflow efficiency of graduate housing and assists with the housing lottery for 3,100+ students, placement of 1,800+ first-year students, and the academic year general housing selection process. By leveraging StarRez, Brownโ€™s Housing software, the Assistant Director ensures optimal occupancy utilization and seamless integration between housing assignments, billing, and campus partner databases.


This term-limited role manages River House occupancy reporting, ensures that all graduate housing processes are integrated seamlessly into StarRez, and provides technical backing for all selection cycles, graduate and undergraduate. While serving as a technical expert for the department, this position actively collaborates with the Associate Director, Residential Operations to support special interest and non-academic term housing processes.


Note: this is a fixed-term position with an end date of June 30, 2027.


Job Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; Masterโ€™s degree preferred.

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in residential life, housing assignments, systems management, or other relevant fields required.

  • Experience working with StarRez and/or other housing management systems required.

  • Data management and analysis skills required.

  • Advanced administrative experience in StarRez (including Report Fuel, Dashboards, and Portal X) is strongly preferred.


Job Competencies

  • Ability to translate complex technical processes into userโ€‘friendly instructions for students, families, and nonโ€‘technical staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify systemic bottlenecks and implement automated solutions to improve the student user journey during highโ€‘stress selection periods.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to exercise effective independent professional judgment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, student organizations, faculty, staff, and other departments.

  • Proven ability to partner with OIT and financial teams to troubleshoot data discrepancies and billing errors.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (Power Query, Pivot Tables) and data visualization tools to present occupancy trends to senior leadership.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, including the ability to provide clear and accurate data in a timely manner.

  • Ability to relate successfully in oneโ€‘onโ€‘one and group situations with individuals representing varied interests.

  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.

  • A working knowledge of principles, practices and theories of student learning and development.

  • Understanding of the cultural, social and educational needs of student residential communities.

  • Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member.
