Job description

Free People is seeking an Assistant Print Designer to support the Textile team. This role plays a key part in the refinement and execution of seasonal prints by assisting in technical development, organization of artwork, ensuring all assets meet the standards and timelines of the product development calendar.

 This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment and is eager to contribute to the success of a dynamic design team.


  • Develop CAD layouts to visualize artwork placement on garments and generate technical packages for vendor communication.
  • Build clear and detailed tech packs, outlining materials, techniques, scale, and color to ensure accurate sample execution.
  • Maintain structured and well-organized digital file systems using established naming conventions for easy access across teams.
  • Support the clean-up, preparation, and finalization of print artwork, borders, and layouts across multiple product categories.
  • Rework original or vintage artwork into production-ready, technical repeats and engineered placements in collaboration with senior team members.
  • Assist in compiling and organizing seasonal artwork packages in alignment with design and development deadlines.
  • Create and maintain internal reference tools, print overviews, and mood/reference walls as guided by senior designers.
  • Support the strike-off and sampling process, including print troubleshooting and coordination with the Design Coordinator and vendor teams.
  • Upload and manage artwork assets in internal systems and tools.
  • Track and manage artwork-related tasks in alignment with key calendar milestones and deadlines.
  • Assist with seasonal administrative responsibilities, including file archiving and documentation.
  • Help identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve team workflows.
  • Operate and maintain Epson printers for in-house sampling, ensuring accurate scale and color printouts are archived.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient studio workspace.

  • Bachelor Degree in Textile Design, Surface Design, Fine Art, Illustration, or related experience preferred.
  • 1-2 Years of related industry expericence preferred.
  • Ability to work on site at our world headquarters in Philadelphia, PA 4-5 days per week required. (Relocation Assistance is provided).

Creative & Technical Skills:

  • Strong foundation in print, textile, or surface design, with demonstrated artistic skills in drawing, painting, and digital design.
  • Attention to detail with repeats and artwork to identify and fix any errors before styles are released to the vendor.
  • Skilled in preparing artwork for production, including technical repeats and engineered layouts.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is required.
  • Familiarity with NedGraphics Design & Repeat (or a strong willingness to learn) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of emerging AI tools like MidJourney or PromeAI is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and/or Google Suite.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a strong artistic foundation with a passion for technical precision and a collaborative mindset.
