Job description

A national insurance defense firm is seeking a Legal Assistant to join its Detroit office, supporting one partner focused primarily on trucking and transportation litigation.

This is a key role within a lean litigation team, working closely with the attorney and paralegal to keep cases moving efficiently. The legal assistant serves as the central point of coordination across deadlines, filings, and day-to-day case activity.

This role is tied to the Detroit office with in-office presence required (hybrid flexibility may be considered after initial ramp-up).

We are moving efficiently and can take candidates from initial conversation to decision within approximately two weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Manage attorney calendar, deadlines, and court schedules
  • Coordinate filings, service, and case-related logistics
  • Track key litigation deadlines and ensure timely completion across the team
  • Serve as point of coordination between attorney, paralegal, and external parties
  • Prepare and format correspondence, pleadings, and basic legal documents
  • Communicate with clients, courts, experts, and opposing counsel as needed
  • Maintain organized case files and ensure accurate recordkeeping
  • Support overall workflow and keep matters progressing efficiently

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of legal assistant experience in a litigation environment
  • Insurance defense experience strongly preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and keep teams on track
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive, ownership mindset
  • Comfort working closely with attorneys and paralegals in a fast-paced setting
  • Experience with court filings and litigation procedures

Compensation

  • $65,000 – $75,000 depending on experience
  • No billable requirement

Why This Role

  • 100+ year firm with national platform
  • Central role within a high-functioning litigation team
  • Direct exposure to partner-level work and case progression
  • Clear structure and processes in place to support success

This is a high-impact role for a legal assistant who takes ownership of workflow and thrives in keeping attorneys and cases organized, on track, and moving forward.
