Assistant Engineering Manager information

What is an assistant engineering manager?

Assistant Engineering Managers support the Engineering Manager in overseeing engineering projects, coordinating teams, and ensuring that technical tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule. They help manage day-to-day operations, assist with project planning, and often serve as a bridge between engineers and upper management. Their role may also include monitoring budgets, ensuring safety standards, and troubleshooting technical issues. This position is ideal for someone with strong technical expertise and leadership skills aiming to advance into higher management roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant engineering manager?

To thrive as an Assistant Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management experience, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project), and knowledge of industry standards or certifications (such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma) are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are vital for coordinating teams and ensuring project goals are met. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering successful engineering projects on time and within budget while fostering a productive team environment.

What are some typical challenges an assistant engineering manager faces when transitioning from an individual contributor to a leadership role?

One common challenge for new Assistant Engineering Managers is balancing hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities such as team coordination, mentoring, and project oversight. Adapting to this dual role requires strong time management and communication skills, as you'll need to guide your team while still contributing your technical expertise. Additionally, you may encounter situations where you must resolve conflicts or make decisions that impact project timelines and team morale. Support from senior management and a willingness to learn from feedback can help you navigate these challenges successfully.

QISG is seeking professionals interested in working to support large-scale engineering and construction projects throughout North America by providing structural design solutions to our construction partners and clients.
About this Role
A Structural Designer within QISG is involved in a variety of engineering projects with a focus on structural design aspects of energy related infrastructure and design-build delivery methods for large-scale energy generation, transmission, and substation-related projects. Collaborating with an in-house, multi-disciplinary engineering and construction team - including civil, structural, geotechnical, construction management, and construction experts - the Structural Designer within QISG plays a crucial role in providing structural design solutions; responsibilities include supporting design production, contributing to the development of construction drawings and specifications, and engineering support during construction.

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the electric/power utility industry performing detailed CAD/design
  • Strong background in structural steel and reinforced concrete detailing as well as bill of material creation
  • Basic knowledge of ASTM, AISC and ACI standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to work with moderate supervision and maximum efficiency in a small or medium-sized office setting
  • Experience with Vault, Advance Steel, Inventor, and REVIT preferred
