Job description

Position Summary

The Visitor Advisor serves as a mobile ambassador for Norfolk, providing destination information and travel counseling across multiple locations including the Visitor Information Center, Norfolk International Airport, community events, and through the Mobile Visitor Center.

This role is highly visible and requires strong customer service skills, adaptability, and the ability to represent VisitNorfolk in a variety of public-facing environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide visitors with information on attractions, dining, hotels, transportation, events, and regional experiences
  • Staff the Visitor Information Center, airport information desk, Mobile Visitor Center, festivals, cruise activations, and outreach events
  • Operate and maintain the Mobile Visitor Center vehicle, including transport, refueling, and general upkeep
  • Set up and break down event materials (tents, tables, displays, brochures, etc.)
  • Maintain and restock brochures and visitor guides across multiple locations
  • Support retail operations, including point-of-sale transactions and inventory support
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Track visitor engagement and maintain accurate reporting data
  • Maintain clean, organized, and professional displays and workspaces
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with visitors, partners, and internal teams
  • Assist with identifying opportunities for community outreach and event participation
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1–3 years of experience in hospitality, tourism, customer service, retail, events, or similar environment preferred
  • General knowledge of Norfolk and the Coastal Virginia region, or ability to learn quickly
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; must be 21+ to operate company vehicle
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, Apple devices, and point-of-sale systems
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods
  • Must be able to pass required background checks and obtain necessary clearances (airport/military access, as applicable)
  • Flexible availability including evenings, weekends, holidays, and event-based scheduling
Work Environment & Physical Demands

This role involves frequent standing, walking, lifting, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.
