Position Summary

The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the company’s accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and month-end close processes. This role oversees daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, general ledger maintenance, job cost support, and compliance with GAAP and company policies.

Remote Work: This is a fully remote position, so you'll need a functional home office setup with reliable internet and a quiet space to work. We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, organized, and able to stay connected and productive while working from home.


Essential Job Functions

· Support the Controller in managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.

· Oversee general ledger activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end closing tasks.

· Assist in preparing financial statements, management reports, and analysis for leadership.

· Review and ensure accuracy of AP, AR, job cost, payroll accounting, and fixed asset activities.

· Monitor internal controls, maintain accounting policies, and support compliance with GAAP.

· Review account reconciliations and identify discrepancies or areas requiring correction.

· Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.

· Ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.

· Support external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor requests.

· Work closely with Project Managers and Operations teams to support job cost accuracy and financial transparency.

· Assist with cash flow monitoring, banking activities, and treasury functions as directed by the Controller.

· Provide training, guidance, and support to accounting staff; help develop team capabilities.

· Review system processes and collaborate on improvements and automation initiatives.

· Help maintain compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements.

· Support the Controller with strategic initiatives, financial modeling, and business planning.

· Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and personnel information.

· Performs other related duties as required or assigned. Responsibilities may be modified or added based on operational needs and business priorities.


Qualifications

Education:

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

· CPA or MBA preferred.


Experience:

· 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience required.

· 2–3 years in a senior accounting, lead, or supervisor role preferred.

· Experience in construction, job cost accounting, or project-based industries strongly preferred.


Licenses/Certifications (if applicable):

· CPA preferred but not required.

· Valid driver’s license required.


Skills:

· Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Requirements: This position is primarily sedentary to light work in nature. The employee is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, telephone, and office equipment, and occasionally stand, walk, bend, or reach. The employee may occasionally lift or move office materials such as files, binders, laptops, or boxes of supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in a professional office environment, with occasional visits to field or construction sites as required. The noise level in the office is usually moderate. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and construction noise when visiting job sites. All work must be performed in compliance with Cal/OSHA safety and ergonomic standards, and employees are expected to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when entering field areas.
