Assistant Controller / AVP - Banking
Location: Bergen County, New Jersey
Job Type: Temporary with Potential for Temp to Permanent
Department: Accounting
Reports To: SVP & Controller
Hourly Compensation: $50.00 to $60.00 per hour
About the Opportunity
A well established financial institution is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller / AVP to join its accounting team on a temporary basis, with the potential to transition into a permanent position.
This newly created role will work closely with the Controller and Executive Management to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, financial analysis, and process improvement.
The ideal candidate will have strong bank accounting experience, advanced analytical capabilities, and the ability to take ownership of complex accounting and financial reporting responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and oversee the General Ledger accounting function to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year end financial close processes.
  • Oversee accounting for the bank's investment portfolio, including purchases, sales, payments, amortization, income, and reconciliations.
  • Review financial statements with the Controller and explain expense histories, trends, and variances.
  • Prepare detailed financial statement analyses and management reports.
  • Support the annual budgeting process and prepare recurring budget schedules and reports.
  • Prepare budget to actual reporting, identify significant variances, and provide follow up analysis.
  • Perform financial modeling, forecasting, and ad hoc financial analysis.
  • Oversee fixed asset accounting and maintain the bank wide fixed asset inventory.
  • Prepare annual financial statement footnotes and supporting documentation.
  • Review and recommend improvements to financial systems, accounting procedures, and processes.
  • Serve as a liaison to department managers regarding accounting related questions and issues.
  • Maintain and revise planning spreadsheets and General Ledger coding used for financial analysis.
  • Analyze complex financial information and translate findings into meaningful recommendations for management.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of new procedures and analytical projects.
  • Supervise and provide direction to accounting staff as needed.
  • Ensure accounting activities comply with applicable laws, regulations, accounting principles, and company policies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of banking accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of bank accounting and General Ledger accounting.
  • Strong understanding of current accounting principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial statements, budgets, and complex financial data.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial information effectively to senior management and non accounting personnel.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising accounting staff is strongly preferred.
