What does an assistant attorney do?

An Assistant Attorney is a legal professional who works under the supervision of a senior attorney or prosecutor, often within government agencies or law firms. Their primary responsibilities include researching legal issues, preparing legal documents, conducting investigations, and representing the government or their organization in court cases. Assistant Attorneys play a crucial role in case preparation, client interviews, and presenting arguments in court, particularly for criminal and civil matters. They assist in ensuring that justice is served and that legal processes are followed correctly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research platforms like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as case management software, is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and negotiation skills help you stand out in handling cases and interacting with clients and colleagues. These skills ensure effective legal representation, efficient case handling, and positive outcomes for clients and the organization.

What are some common challenges assistant attorneys face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Assistant Attorneys often handle a high volume of cases at once, which can present challenges in prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and maintaining attention to detail. Effective time management and organizational skills are crucial for balancing court appearances, legal research, and client communications. Collaborating with senior attorneys and support staff can help distribute workload and ensure thorough case preparation. Regularly updating case files and proactively communicating with team members also helps prevent important details from slipping through the cracks.

Job description

We are a Los Angeles-based litigation firm focused on consumer rights advocacy and civil litigation under California law. Our practice is built on strategic case work, a collaborative team structure, and a genuine commitment to developing attorneys over the course of their careers.

Position Overview

We are seeking Associate Attorneys at varying levels of experience to join our litigation team in Los Angeles. Team placement and case responsibilities are structured according to each attorney's background, with defined paths for those early in their litigation careers as well as those with substantial trial and motions experience. We view this role not as a fixed position, but as a long-term career track within the firm.

Responsibilities for Attorneys Earlier in Their Careers

  • Appear in California state court for hearings, trial calls, and final status conferences under the supervision of senior attorneys
  • Draft and respond to discovery requests, and review opposing parties' submissions
  • Assist in preparing motions and supporting trial preparation
  • Work directly with senior attorneys to build litigation skills across discovery, motions practice, and courtroom appearances

Responsibilities for Attorneys with Established Litigation Experience

  • Independently prepare, draft, and argue substantive motions, including motions to compel and dispositive motions
  • Take primary responsibility for case strategy and trial preparation on assigned matters
  • Represent clients in hearings and trial calls with a high degree of autonomy
  • Mentor and supervise junior attorneys, with opportunities to take on greater case management responsibility over time

Career Development

This role is structured to support long-term professional growth. Junior attorneys receive close mentorship from experienced trial counsel and are given increasing responsibility as their skills develop. Senior attorneys are given ownership over case strategy and the opportunity to build supervisory and leadership experience within the firm. Our goal is for attorneys at every level to develop a broad and durable litigation skill set — spanning discovery, motions practice, and trial work — that supports advancement within the firm over time.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in California (admission to the CA Bar required).
  • Role can be remote with active CA Bar
  • 1-5 years of legal experience, including relevant internships, clerkships, or law school clinics.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.

Compensation

  • Salary range: $130,000–$250,000 annually (DOE)
  • Billing bonus of up to $20,000- straightforward to earn

Benefits

We’re committed to supporting the well-being and success of our team through a robust and thoughtfully designed benefits package, including:

  • 401(k) with Employer Match – Plan for your future with confidence and company support.
  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance – Comprehensive coverage to keep you and your family healthy.
