Job description

Western Engineering Co. Inc. is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Portable Asphalt Plant Operator to join our team. This position will support mobile asphalt plant operations throughout Iowa and Nebraska, playing a critical role in producing high-quality asphalt for our road construction projects.

As a Portable Asphalt Plant Operator, you will be responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining plant equipment while ensuring production meets project specifications and quality standards. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys travel, working with heavy equipment, solving mechanical and operational challenges, and working outdoors as part of a hardworking team.

The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor portable asphalt plant equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent production.
  • Control and adjust plant operations to produce asphalt that meets project specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of plant equipment.
  • Identify mechanical or operational issues and communicate problems to the foreman
  • Coordinate closely with paving crews, truck drivers, and Project Managers to maintain proper production and delivery schedules.
  • Monitor aggregate, liquid asphalt, and other material usage to minimize waste and maintain efficient production.
  • Maintain accurate production, material, maintenance, and equipment records.
  • Assist with plant setup, tear-down, relocation, and startup of portable plant operations.
  • Follow all company policies, OSHA requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and equipment inspections.
  • Perform other duties related to asphalt plant operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in asphalt production or as an asphalt plant operator is highly desirable
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of asphalt production processes, safety regulations, and quality control
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel to different job sites in Iowa and Nebraska
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high operational standards
  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant training or certifications are a plus
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening.
