Position Description

Saint Mary’s Hall seeks a creative, collaborative, and student centered Middle School Art Teacher to join a dynamic Fine Arts program. The ideal candidate will design and deliver a developmentally appropriate, skill based, and exploratory visual arts curriculum for middle school students, fostering creativity, artistic confidence, and critical thinking. This role requires an educator who understands the unique developmental needs of students in grades 6–8 and who values collaboration, inquiry, and growth.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction
  • Design, plan, and deliver engaging visual arts instruction for middle school students aligned with departmental and schoolwide goals.
  • Scaffold instruction to balance skill development, creative expression, and conceptual understanding.
  • Differentiate instruction to support a range of learning needs and artistic abilities.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary connections and real world artistic practices where appropriate.
  • Effectively use assessment strategies aligned with a growth mindset philosophy.
  • Middle School Community Engagement
  • Establish clear, age appropriate expectations and maintain a positive, well managed classroom environment.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with grade level teams, Fine Arts faculty, and other Middle School educators.
  • Participate actively in Middle School life, including faculty meetings, divisional planning, and community events.
  • Professional Collaboration and School Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Fine Arts and Middle School leadership to support the Fine Arts program.
  • Participate in vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment across divisions.
  • Attend faculty meetings, parent conferences, and school events as required
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute positively to faculty culture.
  • Uphold all School policies and procedures.
  • Classroom and Program Management
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming art studio environment.
  • Order, manage, and maintain art supplies in accordance with the departmental budget.
  • Oversee the safe use of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Support student exhibitions and displays of artwork.

  • Embed diversity, equity, and inclusion within curriculum design, artistic examples, and classroom discussions.
  • Use inclusive language, resources, and materials that reflect a wide range of identities and perspectives.

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art Education, or a related field required; advanced degree and teaching certification preferred.
  • Successful experience teaching visual arts at the middle school or upper elementary level preferred.
  • Strong understanding of early adolescent development and middle school learning styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to design student centered, skills based, and process oriented art experiences.
  • Commitment to teaching in a rigorous, college preparatory independent school environment.
  • Growth mindset and passion for encouraging creative risk taking.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in curriculum and classroom practice.
  • Experience integrating technology and contemporary media into visual arts instruction preferred.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Working knowledge of instructional technologies, including learning management systems, digital portfolios, and design tools.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move throughout classroom and studio spaces.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
