ABOUT THE ROLE
The High Museum of Art's Learning and Civic Engagement Department connects people with art and ideas to inspire better civic life. We activate the Museum's collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities, and we collaborate to share creative practices alongside art and artists. Our work cultivates growth through inquiry and strengthens people's connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world. Rooted in the museum's guiding principles-growth, inclusivity, connectivity, collaboration, optimism-and the methods of the department, the Assistant Director, Public Engagement will:
  • Oversee all aspects of High Frequency Friday, Friday Jazz, and art camps. To learn more about these programs, please visit high.org.
  • Oversee the museum's group visit program, focusing on adult and collegiate groups.

The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for visual art and culture, creating and sustaining large-scale events, learning across the lifespan, and connecting the High with Atlanta's communities.
Salary: $76,426.98
SCHEDULE
  • Monday-Friday position from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on-site at the museum
  • Alternative weekend, evening, or morning hours necessary, as required for program implementation (e.g. first and third Friday evenings, camp mornings).

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Program Planning and Implementation (55%)
  • Oversee planning and implementation of monthly High Frequency Friday and Friday Jazz programs. Collaborate across museum departments to gather feedback, evaluate processes and effectiveness.
  • Oversee museum camps-Summer, Spring Break, and Adult and Me-including expenses and revenue, logistics and communication, personnel, and content.
  • Refine the group visit experience. This includes evaluating current processes, integrating related workshops and food and beverage opportunities, overseeing budgeting and logistics, and connecting visitors to the institution.
  • Engage with programs, performances, and cultural events across Atlanta and at peer institutions, and sustain generative relationships with colleagues and institutions nationally and internationally.

Program Evaluation and Reporting (25%)
  • Monitor and adjust program implementation and resource delivery across Public Engagement programs for effectiveness.
  • Gather and analyze program data-including attendance, expenses, revenue, and impact-to develop changes and improvements with the Director, Public Engagement.

Supervision and Training (15%)
  • Supervise the Coordinator of Public Engagement in program implementation.
  • Advise the Manager of Family Programs on group visit experience, revenue, and budget.

Support Learning and Civic Engagement department and other duties as assigned (5%)
  • Work cross departmentally to assist and support other programs as needed.
  • Collaborate with relevant Learning and Civic Engagement divisions, including Creative Aging and Lifelong Learning, Education, and Community Dialogue and Engagement, to ensure programming is thoughtfully integrated and in tandem with other departmental offerings.

Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree (M.A) in humanities or other relevant discipline and 3- 5 years of experience in program management and live events in the visual arts; or
  • B.A. and 7-10 years related experience and/or training; or
  • equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
  • Oral Communication: Demonstrates group presentation skills; participates in meetings; ability to make effective persuasive speeches and presentations to top management, community groups, and the public.
  • Written Communication: writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar, varies writing style to meet project needs, presents numerical data effectively.

Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to compute rates and percentages and to present information in report form
  • Prepare and maintain budgets

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Some standing, walking, bending, frequent use of hands, stooping and light lifting (at least 10 pounds) is needed.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
